Ingredients

  • 1 (5-inch) piece ginger, sliced thinly
  • 1/4 cup sesame oil
  • 8 medium garlic cloves, smashed
  • 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 pounds flank steak, trimmed of fat and sinew

Directions

In a nonreactive dish or large resealable plastic bag, combine all ingredients except steak and mix thoroughly. Add steak and turn to thoroughly coat. Cover dish or close bag and allow to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes. (If you are making ahead, cover, and place in refrigerator. Can be marinated up to 24 hours in refrigerator.)

Once steak has marinated, remove from refrigerator and bring to room temperature for at least 15 minutes. Heat a lightly oiled grill pan to medium-high heat. When pan is heated, remove steak from marinade, shake off excess, add to pan and cook for about 6 to 8 minutes per side for medium rare.

Transfer to a cutting board, season with additional salt and freshly ground black pepper and let rest for 10 to 15 minutes. Slice thinly across the grain and serve.

    Great flavor!

I love this recipe not only because it tastes great, but because it's so easy! When I get my flank steak home from the... market, I marinate it, then shrink wrap it and freeze. When we feel like having it, I take it out of the freezer, defrost and cook. We serve with a root veg and a green veg. Easy and delicious! Cutting the steak thin is key. Also, don't forget to cut across the grain before you marinate so it's less tough. We have BBQ'd it and also grilled it inside on grill pan. Both ways were good. Read more

    how long to marinate?

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
i am making this tonight and am wondering how long to marinade. Some reviews say its bland and others say the flavors are... too strong. Could it be how long they marinated the steak? Wish the reviewers had noted marinating time they used!Read more

    Easy, tasty

I had everything on hand for the marinade so this came together fast. Had time for cocktail hour while it was marinating and... then threw it on the grill for 8 minutes a side. This came out moist and tender using flank steak. None of the flavors overpowered the meal so there was a nice balance.Read more

A Bit of a Let Down

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
I saw this recipe on tv and couldn't wait to try it. The marinade smelled so good while I was making it last night. I... marinated the meat overnight. It smelled good while cooking. Once I got it off (and let it rest) I was let down by the flavor. I was expecting a stronger presence from such a strong marinade, but it was very mild. In fact, I didn't taste any of the marinade at all. I will not be making this again.Read more

I loved this recipe. I only had hot pepper Sesame oil which turned out really good. I can't wait to do this for company.
