- 1 (7-ounce) jar or can organic tomato paste
- 3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons spicy Dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoons BBQ seasoning mix
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
- 4 cups water
Directions
Whisk all the ingredients together in a large saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to maintain a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until reduced by about half or to desired thickness, about 1 hour.
Cool completely before transferring to an airtight container and storing in the refrigerator.
Cook's Note: Use the BBQ sauce within 1 week or freeze for up to 6 months.

OK - I listened to all the comments about "too waterery" "not enough time cooking to thicken" etc. I MADE IT TONIGHT - ALONG WITH THE CHICKEN.
CORRECT - an hour was NOT enough time to thicken the sauce - mine cooked for about 2 1/2 hours and was perfect. I omitted the salt after reading how much salt was in the BBQ seasoning and added a little cayenne and hot sauce for a kick. Also - tell me where you can find a tomato paste in 8 oz ???? The can comes in 7 oz. so I added a little ketchup rather than waste a whole can of paste.
It was a GREAT BBQ sauce - I have plenty left over for other uses. The chicken came out perfect - first time I brined!
Recommend this recipe - thanks Claire!!!

Love this sauce. I have been trying to find a homemade BBQ sauce for months and have not liked any that we tried. They had to many ingredients and got very costly. Made this with pantry staples loved it. This is my new sauce of choice. Not planning to buy jar sauce anytime soon.
