Ingredients

  • 8 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 3/4 cup tomato puree
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 twenty-eight ounce cans red beans, drained and rinsed

Directions

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

Put a heavy-bottomed pot (with a lid) over medium-high heat. Add the bacon and cook, stirring often, until the fat renders and bacon begins to crisp, about 6-8 minutes. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes more. Stir in the ketchup, tomato puree, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire, salt, pepper, and cayenne and mix well. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in the beans until well coated, cover, and bake in the oven for 1 hour. Remove the lid and continue baking until sauce thickens and the beans begin to brown, about 15 minutes more. Remove from the oven and allow to cool at least 15 minutes before serving.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

Sooo much better than canned it's ridiculous! I use tomato sauce or just puree some canned tomatoes for the "tomato puree."

    Yum Yum Yum

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I loved these, absolutely loved them and they were super easy to make too. They were even better the day after. I used a mix... of beans (pinto, red kidney, and black) and since I was cooking for vegetarians, I didn't put in the bacon (which would have made them even better). I HIGHLY recommend making these, so much better than canned. I'm about to make them again for a picnic. YUM, YUM!!!!Read more

    My 'Go-To' Beans Recipe

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
These beans are excellent! I usually chop the bacon finely and discard about half of the rendered bacon fat and the flavor... does not lack at all. I also use a variety of canned beans to liven up the colors and textures. I usually use one can of black beans, one of pinto beans, one of light red kidney beans, and one of dark red kidney beans (all 14.5 oz cans). I also like my beans a little saucier so I increase the amount of sauce ingredients slightly. These beans go great with just about any barbeque item, or picnic fare, and I especially love them with the 'Beer Braised Pork Butt' recipe from the same episode that this beans recipe came from.Read more

Just what I was looking for

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This tasted just like the oven version I grew up making as a kid. I put this in a slow cooker and cooked it for about 4 hours... on high. I added the bacon just at the end to keep it from totally disintegrating. I also used red and black beans. I did add a little liquid smoke (can't help myself; I like the smoky flavor). I think I'd increase the tomato puree and ketchup about 1/2 cup each for the slow cooker, though. My husband thought it fine the way it was, but I thought it needed a bit more moisture and I'm going to try it that way next time anyway! (; Read more
