This is a very speedy, almost comedically so, party-eat that is also, obligingly, rather thrifty to make. It's really quite zingy and packed with flavor and might alarm any passing child expecting more regular sugary fare. I find that it's hugely popular, which is why I make a substantial batch of it.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons wok oil
  • 1 cup (un-popped) popcorn maize
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons ground paprika
  • 4 teaspoons table salt
  • 4 teaspoons sugar

Directions

Put the wok oil into the biggest pan you have with a lid over high heat, add the popcorn and quickly put on the lid. Let the popcorn pop, shaking the pan every now and then to keep the kernels moving. You will hear it but don't be tempted to look, unless you want to get shot at, and once it has stopped popping - a couple of minutes or so - take it off the heat.

Melt the butter with the spices in another pan and then pour it over the popcorn and put everything into a large paper carrier bag/shopper. Shake, shake and shake the bag again to mix the popcorn and get it thoroughly coated in the spicy butter.

Arrange in several party bowls.

Absolutely the BEST popcorn I have ever had. It is sensational! I never have an important movie watching without it.
Forget ANYONE who's pedestrian tastes may have prompted them to give it a low rating. The reason it comes out too salty is the difference in the kinds of salt we use in the States. Just use half a teaspoon or so. The only thing you need to do is stir as your pour, or else the spicy butter will clump and not evenly coat the popcorn.

The 3-star rating almost made me not make this after seeing it on TV, but I read that most people said it was too salty, so I halved the amount of salt, and this was delicious!! Still a tad salty, so I will do a quarter amount (1 tsp of salt next time. I put it in a 350 degree oven for 3-5 more minutes to give it that crunch back. I love the spice combinations, surprisingly. If everyone would try this recipe from here on out, halving the amount of salt, or quartering it, this recipe could easily be 4 or 5 stars!

This was so salty it was inedible! I hate having to throw food away, but this went right into the garbage. The flavor combination was good, but I would cut the salt back to ONE teaspoon, not four.
