Ingredients

  • 16 (10-inch) wooden skewers
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1 small jalapeno, seeded and chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 (1-inch) piece ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 16 colossal shrimp, shelled with tail on, deveined (about 1 1/4 pounds)
  • 4 slices bacon

Directions

Preheat grill to medium.

Soak skewers in water while preparing the BBQ sauce. In a medium saucepan melt butter and saute onions and jalapeno, until tender. Season with cayenne, and salt and pepper. Add ginger, brown sugar, orange juice and ketchup in that order making sure to blend each ingredient completely before adding the next ingredient. Let simmer until the edges begin to caramelize, about 15 minutes. Set aside and let cool. Once cool, remove half of the sauce and reserve for dipping. The other half is for brushing on the shrimp when grilling. Cut bacon in thirds. Thread each shrimp onto a skewer, starting from the tail end. Bend the shrimp as you thread it so it lies in 1 straight line on the skewer, removing its natural curve. Wrap the center of each shrimp with a piece of bacon. Brush with BBQ sauce and place skewers with bacon, seam side down, onto the grill. Cook over medium heat until bacon crisps and shrimp is cooked through, about 8 minutes.

    so good

i made this the other night and it was great. i know some people say it was to spicy but it really isn't you could even kick... it up a little. the one thing i must say is that it might be better to make them on an indoor grill pan or just in a reguler pan i made them on the outdoor grill with a few other things and the bacon burned. the bbq sause was very good i even put on on the ribs we made Read more

    Impressive and easy

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I made this recipe exactly but with a couple of changes in the method. I used precooked bacon (the kind that hormel sells) to... avoid having raw bacon and the shrimp overcooked. Since the bacon is already shrunken from being precooked, I used a whole piece per shrimp and broiled them in the oven, turning once. I made the sauce per the recipe and it was great, maybe a little less brown sugar next time. My guests were really impressed with how pretty the skewers looked.Read more

Wished I read the reviews first

Made this shrimp dish last night for family and friends. The only good thing about this recipe was the bar-b-que sauce. The... butcher thick style bacon woulld not stay in a curled position while cooking and mostly fell off the shrimp. Additionally this did not allow for proper and even cooking of the shrimp. I did try toothpicks, but that was not very successful. Maybe thinner and longer strips of bacon is the answer.Read more

    Great Combination of Flavors!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I never would have put these three flavors together, but I am so glad I did! I followed the recipe as it is written, and It... was fantastic! As another reviewer wrote, I would make sure you use a thinner sliced bacon so it cooks with the shrimp. I also stretched the bacon to make sure it wrapped around the shrimp; my husband suggested holding the bacon together with toothpicks so it doesn't fall off the shrimp. We'll try that next time as we will definitely make this again.Read more

    YUMMY Shrimp!!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I tried this recipe after having something similar at TGI Fridays. The BBQ sauce has got to be one of the best BBQ sauces... that I have ever tasted. I got RAVE reviews on the sauce. I had a slight issue with the bacon because I cut the strips into thirds like the recipe said and they didn't quite make it all the way around all the shrimp and a few fell off during cooking. All in all, I will definitely make this recipe again!! foodnetwork.com has yet to disappoint! Read more
