Ingredients

  • 2 (7-ounce) containers Greek yogurt (recommended: Fage Total)
  • 1 hothouse cucumber, unpeeled and seeded
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh dill
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Toasted Pita Crisps, recipe follows

Directions

Place the yogurt in a medium bowl. Grate the cucumber on a box grater and squeeze the grated cucumber with your hand to remove some of the liquid. Add it to the yogurt along with the sour cream, lemon juice, vinegar, dill, garlic, salt and pepper and stir. Serve with toasted pita crisps.

Toasted Pita Crisps:

  • 8 pita breads
  • Good olive oil

Heat a gas grill or charcoal grill with coals. Brush the pita with olive oil and heat on both sides until toasted.

Yield: 8 servings

    This is the best tzatziki I've tasted, even when I was in Europe! I backed off the salt to 1-1/2 tsp. and it was just right. Delicious and fresh tasting!

    Is a good Tzatziki sauce but WAAY to much salt. I was skeptical when it said 2 tsp which is a lot of salt for the 14oz of yoghurt so at first I put in 1 tsp. When I was done it tasted a little bland though, so I added the other 1 tsp of salt. OOOPS, now its way to salty! I am an idiot and should have put in that last tsp bit by bit but I am surprised that the recipe is like that beacuse its so salty it's almost inedible to me. I will say that I am not a salt-heavy person as my mom has to restrict salt and I've gotten kind of used to that but I was surprised that it was that salty. Otherwise good though, I think I'm going to re-make it with less salt.

    OMG! This is the real deal - very authentic (so say my Greek neighbors. I made the recipe exactly as written except for the salt. I only used 1 teasp. After I shredded the cucumber, I put it in a strainer and pressed out the water. I also let the mix sit, covered, overnight in the refrigerator. I liked it a lot more after it had a chance to meld the flavors. OUTSTANDING! Thank you, Ina!
