Ingredients

  • 4 hearts romaine, chopped
  • 4 slices bacon
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Place romaine in a serving bowl. In a skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy. Remove bacon and crumble over greens. To the pan, add sugar and vinegar, and simmer until sugar is dissolved, scraping up bacon bits that cling to the bottom of the pan. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Pour hot dressing over greens and toss. Serve immediately.

So yummy! Also tossed fresh baby spinach and kale w/the romaine for a little variety the second time I made this and both times were big hits!

This is amazing, my great grandmother, from Austria... made at huge family gatherings using both romaine and red leaf lettuce often would toss in green onions ... this dressing is closest to hers I have found & simply amazing. Her story was of making in containers the size of a wash tub for family gatherings in Austria growing up. fantastic find, thanks!!

The only bad thing about this recipe is that I was hard pressed to share with the rest of the family. I would have been happy to eat it all by myself! Absolutely delicious! I used balsamic vinegar and it was simply marvelous!
