9 Ways to Make Your Own Flavored Chips

Time to raid your spice cabinet! With tortillas or pitas on hand, you can easily whip up one (or all!) of these 9 chip flavors in your own kitchen.

If you've never made your own chips at home, you may be surprised to learn just how quick and easy it can be. Fifteen minutes or less is all it takes to transform a short stack of plain tortillas or pitas and a few jars from your spice cabinet into a warm and crunchy snack that fills your kitchen with the smell of freshly toasted spices.

 

Simply cut tortillas or pitas into triangles, brush them with olive oil and bake. Then add one of our nine spice mixtures like classic Ranch, sweetly spicy Gingerbread or globe-trotting Za'atar and pop them back in the oven to bring out all the flavors. It's easy to create customized chips that are so much better than anything you could buy at the store.

 

To make chips using tortillas:

Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and brush both sides of the 4 corn tortillas with olive oil. Stack tortillas and cut into 8 pieces. Place in a single layer on parchment in middle rack of oven. Bake 7 minutes, remove from oven and flip each chip over. Sprinkle or brush on spice mixture and bake an additional 7 minutes.

 

To make chips using pitas:

Preheat oven to 375 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and brush both sides of the 2 pitas with olive oil. Stack pitas and cut into 8 pieces. Take each triangle and cut back pita seam to make 2 triangles. Place in a single layer on parchment in middle rack of oven. Bake 7 minutes, inner pita side up. Remove from oven and flip each chip over. Sprinkle or brush on spice mixture and bake an additional 3 minutes.

 

Note: Each recipe makes 32 chips.

Ranch

1 t dried parsley + 1/2 t dried dill + 1/4 t garlic powder + 1 t onion powder

Mexican

1 T olive oil + 1/2 t McCormick Taco Seasoning + 1/4 t lime extract

Vietnamese

1/8 t ground star anise + 1/4 t cinnamon + 1/4 t ground ginger + 1/2 t garlic powder + 1/4 t lime extract

Margarita

2 t granulated sugar + 1/2 t kosher salt + 1/4 t lime extract

Caribbean

1/16 t nutmeg + 1/4 t cinnamon + 1/4 t garlic powder + 1/8 t ground ginger +1/2 t jerk seasoning

Za'atar

1/2 t dried thyme + 1 1/2 T sesame seeds + 1/2 t sumac

Gingerbread

1/6 t ground cloves + 1/4 t cinnamon + 1/8 t ground allspice + 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg + 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger + 1 t brown sugar

Garlic and Herb

1/4 t dried basil + 1/4 t dried dill + 1/2 t garlic powder + 1/2 t dried chives

BBQ

1/8 t cayenne + 1/4 t chili powder + 1/8 t garlic powder + 1/2 T light brown sugar + 1/4 t onion powder
