Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 jalapeno, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 packages premade pie crust

Directions

Special equipment: 3-inch cookie cutter

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Brown the ground beef in a large saute pan over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, paprika, thyme, black pepper, and salt. Stir together, and then add the jalapeno. Remove from the heat, and add the bread crumbs and the beef broth. Stir well to combine and set aside to cool completely.

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, curry powder and water. Set aside.

On a work surface, flatten the pie crusts and cut out 3-inch rounds using a cookie cutter.

Add a hearty tablespoon of the beef mixture onto each round. Fold over and press the edges with your fingers. Crimp the edges with a fork. Transfer the patties to a baking sheet and brush the tops with the egg mixture. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Arrange on a serving platter and serve.

Excellent But Recipe Calls For Too Much Salt

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
This recipe was outstanding! Everyone loves it. I only gave it 4 stars, because 1 Tablespoon of salt is way too much! As... an experienced cook, I knew this just looking at the recipe. I added one teaspoon and it was still almost too salty for me, but once it got in the pie crust, it was fine. Had I used the 1 Tablespoon, it would have been inedible. Aside from that correction, it would be a five star PLUS recipe!Read more

    Awesome!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
Saw these on the show and had to make them. Made according to recipe and they were better than they sounded on tv. However,... it took me far longer than the time says. I must not be that fast at getting them wrapped up, but it was worth the wait! Big Daddy, I'm glad you won, 'cause you have some GREAT recipes!Read more

Good - Needed Modification for my Taste

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
This was a great recipe as a base for creating beef pies, but I had a few problems with it and had to make modifications the... second time I made it. The pie crust was too sweet with the spicy meat. I modified using empanada dough. They probably would be good with puff pastry too. They were also too bready for my taste, so I reduced the bread crumbs by half and reduced the broth so that it had a more meaty taste. My biggest problem with this recipe was the "salt". One tablespoon of salt was extreme, and I love salt, but it was way too much. I even tried to fix it by adding more beef, but it was beyond repair. I modified by using just 1 teaspoon of salt.. After making these changes it was really good. Thank you for the basics. Read more

    OK

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
After reading the reviews I thought these would be fantastic. Maybe it was the pie crust I purchased. I did half with pie... crust and half with puff pastry. Actually the puff pastry ones were a lot better. The pie crust I used was a little tough. I think you need to make larger rounds. I used a 3-1/2" round cutter which was easier to fill. We even baked them in the grill one night so I wouldn't have to heat up the house. Read more

    Fantasmic!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
The recipe was easy to follow. However, I would maybe try a different kind of crust because I was having trouble stuffing the... crust with a nice amount of beef without there being too much crust and not enough meat. I too used a coffee canister to cut the crust. And I too added some cheese to my meat. Aside from that, the patties turned out great! They were soo tasty. I now have a request for them : )Read more

    Big Daddy you ROCK!!!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
What a sweet guy you are!!! I'm so glad you won! These pies were awesome! I didn't have fresh jalapenos so just used... handful of the sliced kind in the jar and chopped them up. I didn't have a cookie cutter so I used an instant coffee container lid that was a tiny bit larger than 3 inches,it worked perfectly. For the person who couldn't find the crusts: The premade pie dough comes in a long box... packs of two in the isle at the grocery store that has all the Pillsbury canned refrigerated rolls and cinnamon buns. The pie crusts are rolled up and you just unroll them. Perfect and easy. The eggwash with curry made the pies look shiny and golden, looked like something iyou'd see in a Jamaican deli or shop. No wonder you paid a dollar a patty to the old lady after a night out like you said when you were making them!! I will make again and again. thanks so much for being such a great guy!! Best of Luck in everything.Read more
