Ingredients

  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons honey, warmed in microwave for 20 seconds
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 (1/2-inch) slices day-old or stale country loaf, brioche or challah bread
  • 4 tablespoons butter

Directions

In medium size mixing bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, eggs, honey, and salt. You may do this the night before. When ready to cook, pour custard mixture into a pie pan and set aside.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Dip bread into mixture, allow to soak for 30 seconds on each side, and then remove to a cooling rack that is sitting in a sheet pan, and allow to sit for 1 to 2 minutes.

Over medium-low heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a 10-inch nonstick saute pan. Place 2 slices of bread at a time into the pan and cook until golden brown, approximately 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove from pan and place on rack in oven for 5 minutes. Repeat with all 8 slices. Serve immediately with maple syrup, whipped cream or fruit.

    YUMMY!! 4 1/2 stars!

YUMMY but substituted half and half with skim milk. I also added vanilla and cinnamon, great additions! I'm sure it would... be 5 stars if actually fattened it up! The oven was a great idea, it makes the slices raise! Read more

This is the best french toast I have ever eaten, but it really did need vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. It was very rich and... delicious!Read more

Letting the bread soak is key to buiding up the crepe layer. A minute a side on medium heat and done.

    A few suggestions...

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This recipe is great...here's what I do to it to "make it my own". First, I like to add a little bit of cinnamon and vanilla... to the egg mixture. Also, for a topping you might want to try slicing up a banana, saute it with a little brown sugar and some crushed up walnuts. Then, when the bananas have a nice caramelization going, add some maple syrup or honey. Soooo good!Read more

This wasn't the first time I've made french toast, but first time doing so in the oven. I love the technique but not the best... french toast Ive had. Read more
