Ingredients

  • Leftover baked macaroni and cheese, refrigerated for at least overnight
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1 egg beaten with 2 ounces water
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • Oil for deep frying, preheated to 375 degrees

Directions

Cut refrigerated macaroni and cheese into slices or bite size pieces.

Season the flour with salt, pepper and cayenne. Dredge each piece through the flour and gently tap off excess. Dip in the egg wash and then coat with the bread crumbs. Allow them to rest for 5 minutes so the crust can set. Very carefully drop into the oil and fry until golden brown. Remove to a baking sheet fitted with a rack and rest for 2 minutes before serving.

Now I have yet to try this with his baked macaroni and cheese recipe but I used it with mine. I hadn't added enough... seasoning in mine but despite my first attempt folly I found this to have extraordinary potential for something so simple. Absolutely fantastic with leftovers and I'm debating on making another batch of macaroni and cheese so I can try again. Really 5 star stuff since it's very simple and very open to any kind of personal adjustments to more fit the taste of you and your family. Read more

    Great Idea!

We loved this idea... Didn't follow recipe exactly though. We don't care for "spicy" so... We just left the spices out. Son... doesn't like bread crumbs so... we just used flour for final coating. I've always made too much mac & cheese - Now I know what to do with the left-overs! Thanks Alton - Just Love Your Show!Read more

We make extra mac and cheese just so we have enough to make this the next day. My whole family loves it!

Alton Brown is my hero, and after you try deep fried mac and cheese, he will be yours too! This recipe is so easy, and... absolutely delicious. My tip: Cut the mac and cheese into rectangular slabs (rather than cubes). This lets you reheat left overs in the toaster, keeping the breading golden brown and delicious!Read more
