Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground turkey
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 8 (1/4-inch thick) slices good quality rye bread
  • 8 (1/4-inch thick) slices Gruyere
  • Grilled Onion Relish, recipe follows

Directions

Heat grill to high. Divide the ground turkey into 4 equal burgers, brush with oil, and season with salt and pepper on both sides. Grill for 3 to 4 minutes per side for medium-well doneness (the burger will continue to cook when placed back on the grill in the next step).

Place the bread on a flat surface. Top each slice with a slice of cheese and a few tablespoons of Grilled Onion Relish. Place a burger on top and then top the burger with the remaining 4 slices of bread. Brush the top of the bread with the oil and place the burgers carefully on the grill, oiled side down, and press down slightly on the sandwich with a metal spatula. Grill for 1 to 2 minutes or until golden brown, then brush the top slice of bread with oil, flip over, press the top with the spatula and cook until that side is golden brown and the cheese has melted. Cut in half and serve.

Grilled Onion Relish:

2 red onions, peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch thick slices

Olive oil

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Salt and freshly ground pepper

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh thyme leaves

Heat grill to high. Brush onions on both sides with oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill on each side for 3 to 4 minutes or until slightly charred and just cooked through.

Whisk together vinegar, mustard, salt, pepper, and thyme in a medium bowl. Whisk in 1/4 cup of olive oil until emulsified. Add the onions and stir until combined. Let stand at room temperature until ready to use.

    Turkey Terrific!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
We normally go straight for the traditional meat version for a hamburger as the turkey burgers are always so dry-this was the... exception! Very tasty and easy to prepare. The only change I made was using regular onions as the red onions are a little too powerful for our tastes-especially 2 of them! Fabulous recipe!Read more

Can't Stop Thinking About This Burger.

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I made these burgers last night, and I seriously can't stop thinking about how good they were. I wanted seconds! Usually... with turkey burgers they're so dry and bland--the grilled onion relish completely solves this issue. I was a little skeptical with all the strong flavors (onions, balsamic vinegar, rye bread) but they were amazing together! Delish. I would definitely recommend making this on the grill--the extra smokey flavor just tops it all off. If you make it inside on a indoor grill you just can't get that same aroma and crispiness. I've never grilled and entire burger on the grill after assembly, but this just makes it SO much better. This is going into regular rotation in our house. YUM!Read more

    Relish was horrible

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
I followed the recipe to make the relish almost to the tee (I put the onions on the George Foreman grill instead of gas... grill).....it was absolutely horrible! All I tasted was the balsamic vinegar....I don't know what I did wrong but after reading the other reviews, it must have been something. Would not try this again.Read more

    Very Good

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
My husband and I made these melts this weekend and liked them for a change of pace. I think ours needed more cheese on them... and if I make them again, I'll mix the salt and pepper into the meat rather than just on the outside like another reveiwer did. Onion relish was awesome and without it the burger would have been another bland turkey burger. I have leftover relish so I'm hoping to make something else this week that it will compliment. Give it a try!Read more

    Best Turkey Burger

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
The grilled onion relish is easy to make and tastes delciously sweet, due to the Spanish onions and balsamic vinegar. While... the relish marinades, make up the turkey patties. This is an easy lunch to grill. A hot grill makes them golden brown with a nice outside crust. Lots of flavor from a turkey burger.Read more
