Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 star anise pods
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 (12-ounce) bottles lager beer, chilled (recommended: Heineken)

Directions

In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, water, star anise, and cinnamon sticks over medium heat. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved, about 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the syrup to cool, about 1 hour. Strain the syrup into a large pitcher and refrigerate until ready to serve. Slowly pour the beer into the pitcher. Stir and serve.

I'm not much of a beer drinker but decided to try this out after I saw it on her show. Didn't know what quite to expect but it was acutally very refreshing and would be great for summertime. Will definitely make again!

I made this for my husband who loves beer. He really liked it but said you wouldn't want to drink a lot of it because it's sweet. It is an unusual taste but I would definitely make it again. The syrup does smell wonderful.

The resulting syrup is delicious, but adding it to the beer it's a bad idea. It's gross. Save it for a dessert.
