Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups milk, warm
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Dash salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Dash hot sauce
  • Dash Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 cups shredded Cheddar
  • 1 pound cavatappi pasta, cooked al dente
  • 1 cup crushed potato chips
  • 5 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan, for topping

Directions

Heat oven to 350 degrees F.

Melt 6 tablespoons butter in a large saucepot over medium heat. Add flour and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Whisk in the warmed milk and bring to a boil, continue to whisk constantly. The mixture will thicken as the heat increases. Continue to stir while adding

the dry mustard, nutmeg, cayenne, salt, pepper, hot sauce and Worcestershire. Stir in the 3 cups of Cheddar until it melts.

Pour the cheese sauce over the noodles and add to a 3 quart casserole dish.

Sprinkle the chips, bacon and Parmesan on top and bake for 35 minutes.

    As with all food you have to taste it as you go, the cheese sauce needed to be doctored to my taste but it was easy and I... added some sour cream and cream of chicken soup a little nutmeg and poultry seasoning and it made it creamier and fantastic! But my suggestion if you didn't like the recipe would be taste it and make it your own!Read more

    I was disappointed in this recipe, I actually made it for the family for Sunday Dinner after church. I was a little... embarrassed. I dont think this recipe should be put in the oven, and so what I did was I took it home and mixed it with some hamburger meat and added some milk and more cheddar cheese to flavor it up. Money is tight these days so I just couldnt see myself throwing money away.Read more

    I had such high hopes for this recipe. I can't tell you how disaapointed I was. I knew the moment my husband took a bite that... it was horrible. He made a face! Other reviws were right...this had no flavor whatsoever and it was so dry. It looked better just after mixing in the cheese before putting it in the oven. At least then it was creamy and thick the way I love mac and cheese. I was horrified but I had to throw it away.....such a waste of money in an economy that is already playing havoc with my grocery bill. I balled up the recipe and tossed it in the trask along with an entire pan of this goop. ps....the only good part was the bacon and potato chip crust.Read more

    Good mac but needs more cheese

    It's a good recipe and fairly easy to make, but like most baked mac/cheese recipes it needs more cheese flavor. It's kind of... bland. It needs a punch from maybe some other kind of cheese but not sure what.Read more
