Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Butter
  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/8-inch thick slices
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan, plus more for broiling

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

In a saucepan, heat up the cream with a sprig of thyme, chopped garlic and nutmeg.

While cream is heating up, butter a casserole dish. Place a layer of potato in an overlapping pattern and season with salt and pepper. Remove cream from heat, then pour a little over the potatoes. Top with some grated Parmesan. Make 2 more layers. Bake, uncovered, for 45 minutes. Sprinkle some more Parmesan and broil until cheese browns, about 5 minutes.

I made this after thanksgiving-looking for a recipe for leftover potatoes i had on hand...WOW! What few ingredients pack... such a punch! I made again on Christmas eve for my family, with Ina's bay scallop gratin, and got rave reviews...i was not even surprised! Will continue to make again and again! Thanks for a keeper!Read more

I added extra parmesean layered with added chopped onion, cheddar, garlic and cajun. We like spicy. It was wonderful! We... had it with brandied mushroom new york strip (also by Tyler). What an excellent meal! 10 stars all the way! Kudos toTyler! Read more

    Fabulous

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This is a must try recipe. I have made it twice now and followed what Tyler didi in the video by pouring the warmed cream... with thyme into bowl with sliced potatoes. This method coated all the potatoes and then I layered them into the buttered casserole dish. I dare anybody to follow this recipe and say, it wasn't the best potato gratin ever. If you make this dish I promise you won't be disappointed.Read more

    Not bad, but not great

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
Made this for dinner tonight. It was really easy and was definitely good, but it was pretty bland. Next time I will add some... other cheeses, onion, and maybe a little cayenne. Not a bad base recipe though!Read more

    A hit for easter brunch

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I made this for an easter brunch and it was a total hit - many compliments and people were even eating it cold! I added... extra cheese (fontina and parm combined) because of another reviewer's recommendation and I thought it turned out great. I bet it's great with other adjustments as well. Will be making this one again!!!Read more
