This riff on the classic Mai Tai gets a smoky kiss of mezcal, “which is one of my favorite things,” says Ivy Mix. Shaken with orgeat—an almond syrup enhanced with orange flower or rose water—it’s a complex cocktail that’ll put you on island time!

Ingredients

3/4 ounce fresh lime juice

1/2 ounce orgeat

1/2 ounce orange curaçao, preferably Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao brand

1 ounce mezcal, preferably Del Maguey Vida Mezcal brand

1 ounce Jamaican rum, preferably Appleton Estate VX brand

Ice cubes

Crushed ice

Garnish

1 orchid blossom

1 sprig mint

1 lime wheel

Directions

  1. Into a cocktail shaker, add lime juice, orgeat, curaçao, mezcal, and rum. Fill shaker with ice cubes, and fill rocks glass with crushed ice. Shake cocktail well. Strain into the glass and top with more crushed ice. Garnish with orchid; smack fresh mint against the back of your hand (to aromatize the essential oils) and add to drink along with lime wheel.
