Ingredients

1/4 cup rolled oats

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons sugar

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 strip bacon, chopped

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

2 Macintosh apples, cored and halved

1/3 cup heavy cream

2 tablespoons pure maple syrup

Fresh mint leaves, for garnish (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Put the oats, flour, sugar, cinnamon and bacon in a food processor and pulse until the bacon is finely chopped and the ingredients are well combined. Add the butter and pulse until incorporated and the topping starts to clump together.
  2. Mound clumps of the streusel on the cut-side of the apples and place in a small baking dish. Add about 1/2 inch water to the dish, and then bake until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown and crisp, about 45 minutes (loosely cover with foil if the topping is getting too brown before the apples are cooked).
  3. Whisk the cream and maple syrup together. Serve the apples with the maple cream and garnish with mint if desired.
