Halal Cart White Sauce

  • Level: Easy
  • Yield: 4 to 6 servings

One of the things that makes halal cart food so delicious is the white sauce drizzled generously on top. It’s a combination of yogurt, mayonnaise, vinegar and sugar, mixed together with some garlic until the flavors are fully combined. You can make a big batch and keep it in the fridge for a few days. Yogurt can vary in consistency, so if your white sauce is too thick, simply thin it out by adding a bit of water, one teaspoon at a time.

Ingredients

1/2 cup plain yogurt (see Cook's Note)

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1 tablespoon white vinegar

1 teaspoon sugar

2 cloves garlic, minced

Kosher salt

Directions

  1. Combine the yogurt and mayonnaise in a bowl. Add the vinegar, sugar, garlic and 1/2 teaspoon salt and stir to combine. If the sauce is too thick, add some water 1 teaspoon at a time. Store in a jar or squeeze bottle in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Cook’s Note

It’s best to use whole-milk yogurt in this recipe because of its full flavor and creamy texture.

The sugar is such a bizarre choice. Completely ruined the taste for me. I added lots of lemon and olive oil to try and balance the sweetness, but this recipe is nothing like what is served on a street cart. Its okay with gyro meat but not what was advertised.
