Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup good quality popcorn
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt or popcorn salt
  • Sprinkle jalapeno seasoning mix
  • Paper lunch bag
  • Stapler

Directions

Toss the popcorn with the olive oil, salt, and jalapeno seasoning mix in the paper bag. Fold the top of the bag over and staple the bag twice to close. Place the bag in the microwave and microwave on high for 2 minutes to 3 minutes, or until there are about 5 seconds between pops.

NOTE: Popcorn salt is a super-fine salt that is designed especially for sticking to food such as popcorn. It has the taste of regular table salt, but its granules are much finer.

my air popped finally bit the dust after 20 years, so an emergency snack attack sent me to the internet for a quick fix. ... THANK YOU Mr. Brown - I subbed a white paper bag since that's all I have and taped the bag closed and voila - beautiful fresh popcorn. Read more

    New Microwave?

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I could not believe the post about the person who said they needed a new microwave (from Wal Mart no less). Well, Wal Mart... shopper, if you only put 2 staples in the bag, it should have been invisible to the microwave in the first place, and certainly should not have ruined it. If this broke your microwave, then you needed a new microwave. This recipe is great and allows you to make microwave popcorn for pennies. I find the oil and seasoning unnecessary before cooking, but Alton is a genius at making cooking fun and easy to understand. I have made countless recipes from Good Eats with great success. Alton has taken cooking shows from boring to fun. I loved Julia Child and Justin Wilson, but Alton takes cooking shows to a whole new level. Good Eats is absolutely the best cooking show ever (if you actually want to cook).Read more

Never buying store bought microwave popcorn ever agin

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
This is sooooo good!!!. This is my 1st time making it & what I would change would be the 2tsp of oil. 1 is plenty, 2 makes... the bag too greasy. Also I will use either vegetable or lite olive oil next time, not EVOO too heavy & strong. & yes I agree with the other writer what is wrong w/Elton. A metal stapler is not good unless you want fireworks with your popcorn,LOL. I just folded the bag 3 times & it was fine. You got to play with the measurements of the popcorn because the 1/4 cup is only enough for 1 person. Read more

I make it in my microwave using a microwave pocorn dish

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I leave off the brown bag. Tastes almost as good as making it on the stovetop. Without the smell of heating oil, and less... oil. I add garlic powder in lieu of the jalepeno salt and when it is done add Cholula hot sauce and better than butter spray and a sprinkling of creole salt, YUM YUM. Read more

    Have a little failth...

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
Awesome recipe, looking forward to trying it without oil! Note that regular granular salt can be ground finer (Magic Bullet,... spice grinder, etc.) to make popcorn salt. About the staple issue... come on, give Mr. Brown some more credit! First of all, metal in the microwave cannot destroy the microwave (like they show in Gremlins II) but it CAN start fires if the wrong type of object is in the microwave. My microwave has a metal shelf, and it doesn't explode or catch fire! The trick is not to have an item with points that can arc to each other, such as the tines of a fork. A couple of staples should be fine in the microwave. That said, it is not a good idea to put metal in the microwave unless you know its safe.Read more
