Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • About 1 1/2 cups butterscotch, semisweet chocolate, peanut butter, or white chocolate chips, optional

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Butter and flour a 9 by 13-inch glass baking dish.

Put the sugar in a large bowl. Melt the butter in a small skillet or in the microwave in a glass measuring cup. Stir the butter into the sugar until smooth, cool to room temperature.

Meanwhile, in another medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt together.

Beat the eggs and vanilla into the sugar mixture. Add the flour mixture a bit at a time and mix until a smooth thick batter forms. Fold in the chips, as desired.

Spoon the batter to the prepared dish and spread to evenly fill the dish. Bake until the blondies are light brown around the edges and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 20 to 25 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Invert onto a rack and cool completely. Cut into squares and serve.

A bit on the sweet side

My daughter and I made these together. They're really easy, but they were super sweet. Love the texture, but the white... chocolate on top of the sugar was a bit too much.Read more

Good base for doing your own thing

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
This is a decent recipe if you want something basic and very easy. I don't like the cake-like texture of the finished product... so I use two yolks and one egg white. The best combination I have used is add: 1 TSP cinnamon, chopped hazelnuts or almonds, 1 CUP white chocolate chips. Yum!Read more

    Love Them

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I added Walnuts and Coconut to them after reading some of the other comments and cut back on the Chocolate Chips. They came... out of the oven a little mushy so I may leave the next batch in for 3-5 minutes longer. They came out really good though...1/2 the pan is gone already! Read more

So blah, tasted like corn bread. Nothing I did to them made them taste better. Don't waste your time and ingredients!!!

quick & easy, but very blah.

I agree with the other reviewers who said this recipe is bland and boring, and I even used a delicious muscovado sugar and... added toffee bits along with the chocolate chips. I made two batches and ended up adding extra toffee to the second batch--that definitely improved the flavor, but they're still not that great. I can't imagine how bland and yucky these would be with plain brown sugar and no toffee.Read more
