Ingredients
  • Dijon mustard
  • Eight 1/2-thick slices country-style white bread
  • 12 ounces farmhouse Cheddar, sliced
  • 12 slices bacon, cooked to desired doneness
  • 1 green apple, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
Directions

Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium-low heat. Alternatively, you can use a panini press if you have one.

Generously spread the Dijon on 4 slices of bread. Top each slice with some of the Cheddar, 3 pieces of bacon, some apple and additional Cheddar. Place a slice of the remaining bread on top of each sandwich and spread with the butter. Place a sandwich on the skillet buttered-side down and butter the remaining side. Cook until the cheese is slightly melted and the bread is browned. Flip the sandwich and continue to cook until the cheese is thoroughly melted and the sandwich is golden brown. Repeat with the remaining sandwiches.

Absolutely perfect grilled cheese - and so simple! It's a keeper. item not reviewed by moderator and published
both me and my hubby loved these sandwiched, very refreshing and yummy. I personally didn't care for the bacon in it for some reason (and I love bacon but the combination of apples, cheese and mustard was just fantastic. yum yums. I also made them with potato bread and they came out super good. item not reviewed by moderator and published
The kids request this one all the time. It is a great taste combo. To mix it up, I have tried different breads, but keep everything else the same. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Really great flavor combo and so simple to make, Felt like I was eating a sandwich from a bistro at my dining room table and the best part is I made it! item not reviewed by moderator and published
You can't go wrong with this "Tylerized" sandwich. You've got to try it. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This sandwich was amazing. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Didn't change a thing. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is a great grilled cheese sandwich. This time I used ciabatta bread, broiled it open face for just a minute and it was delicious. great flavors. item not reviewed by moderator and published
My husband enjoyed this sandwich & I'll make it again. I used center cut bacon (4 pieces each sandwich, 2 slices of medium cheddar, and Granny Smith apple. My apple was really, really tart, which detracted a bit. I'll use some other type of apple next time. item not reviewed by moderator and published
My roommate and I were amazed at the wonderful flavors of this recipe! I used one slice of cheddar and one slice of gouda (it is one of my favorites and this was a huge hit! Great recipe again tyler! Thanks! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Anothet hit Tyler, thank you sir. item not reviewed by moderator and published
OMG! The best grilled cheese ever. I used sourdough bread slices and everything else same as recipe. I have made it using both medium and sharp cheddar and both were awesome. May try a mixed cheese next time for hubby. He likes swiss so maybe will substitute a slice of swiss and 2 slices of cheddar. Have had a plain mix cheese grilled and its good so we will see. I love all of these ingredients so putting them together made them even better! Great sandwich for company! Thanks Tyler! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Was expecting a bit more. I like the bacon/apple/cheese combo, but the bacon just added too much fatty flavor to the already dense grilled cheese. If I use this recipe again, I'll do just cheddar and apple. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is a cool combination and so obvious, I never thought of it. I made the sandwich as written and the apples stayed crisp, the mustard added just the right amount of a savory flavor and there's nothing like grilled cheese! A few days later, I made the sandwich again with cinnamon raisin bread. I sauteed paper thin slices of a whole honeycrisp apple (cut on a small mandolin) in a Tablespoon of unsalted butter and half teaspoon honey. I used the the dijon mustard on one and not the other; of course without the mustard it cut the sweetness. Both family and friends who were around when I made them, thought they were a hit either way. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Delicious! I love cheddar, bacon and apples, but was a little apprehensive about the addition of mustard to this sandwich (I'm really not a mustard person. But, being the culinary adventurer I am, I tried it. And it was SO totally worth it. This sandwich is wonderful- the bacon is salty, the cheese is gooey, the apple is sweet, and the mustard brings out the best in both the apple and the cheese, making them work wonderfully together. Besides the taste, the texture is also fabulous. The apple has just enough crunch to counter the cheese, and the sandwich stays together perfectly- no falling apart! I would totally recommend it- it's easy and delicious! item not reviewed by moderator and published
My favorite grilled cheese sandwich EVER! I usually make this version when craving a grilled cheese but I must admit, I made 1 small change and use prosciutto instead of bacon but it's really good either way. One night I had a couple of friends over and did an unexpected dinner with this recipe and one couldn't believe how simple and delicious it was; she really liked the mustard in it. I would recommend cooking the apples a bit before if you prefer them softer since they don't really get soft. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Great, Tasty, Creamy, & Yummy... what more can I say about an A++ Sandwich except " Thanks" for the recipe!! : item not reviewed by moderator and published
This grilled cheese is perfect. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is the best grilled cheese EVER! My husband and I love it. It is our favorite way to have grilled cheese! The apples, bacon, dijon mustard and white cheddar combine into such a wonderful flavor combination. If you have never have these you are missing out. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Just had it... rave reviews all around.... DA BOMB!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
my family lovedthese so much!! even the picky 8 year old couldn't resist them. they were easy and delicious, I will definitely be making them again! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I have made these several times now. The last time with sourdough bread instead of plain white. The best yet!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Very delicious, I substituted what I had on hand, honey mustard and a jonathon gold apple....very good....must try!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is a great play on a old favorite. I used a SHARP aged white cheddar and I cooked the bacon until it was crispy. Also, I think the granny smith paired well with everything. Ummmmmm. Wont be eating this often due to the calorie count but it's a good thing to have on a blistery cold day with some warm soup. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Very delicious sandwich, everyone loved it - served with the Hunter's Minestrone. Next time I think I will chill the apples first, I used room temp apples and they turned a little limp after cooking in the sandwich and I think it would be better if they stayed crisp. A definite splurg due to the high fat content but oh so yummy! item not reviewed by moderator and published
The sharpness of the cheddar plays perfectly with the other ingredients. The natural sweetness of the apple compliments the little kick of the dijon mustard. Just be careful not to add too much dijon, could overpower the bacon. Also, i used "country cured" triple smoked bacon from my local butcher shop which worked very well with all of the different flavors. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I've always made grilled cheese with mustard, so that wasn't a new combo for us, but with the apples and bacon - wow! Great flavor combination. I used Granny Smith apples and Tillamook cheddar (not sure if Tillamook is available anywhere but the West Coast). I thought the apples were just a little too tart, so next time I'm going with Fuji and pepper bacon. Really looking forward to that combination too. Thanks for taking an old family staple and kicking it up several notches!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I was really excited to make this, the only change I made was using american cheese because it was all I had, but I think the apples could be left off it didnt really go to well with the cheese but the mustard was a plus I think Im going to continue using it from now on. I know the flavors sound off but you should at least try it once, maybe you might like it with apples item not reviewed by moderator and published
I'm actually having it right now :) I wouldn't take or add anything :) item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is the best grilled cheese EVER! My whole family loves it. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This recipe was awesome and my kids and I loved it. I tried it with the mustard and without, and without was better hands down. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Loved this new way to try grilled cheese. My boyfriend likes things pretty simple so he didn't care for the apples on the sandwich. I love the apple/cheese combo though. I bought plain bacon put it on a baking sheet lined with foil and seasoned with salt, pepper and a little bit of steak seasoning. Cooked at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, it was PERFECT. Not too crunchy for the sandwich. Will definitely make this sandwich again, and will probably always make bacon that way from now on. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I knew I was making grilled cheese and soup for dinner but wanted to jazz it up a bit. There was a bag of apples in the kitchen and I wondered if apples and grilled cheese would mix well. On to foodnetwork.com to find out. This was the very first recipe on the list and it was CRAZY good. It really blew me away! I used turkey bacon and American cheese (all I had on hand) but I am looking forward to cheddar. The Dijon just brings it all together and the pinch of sweet and flavor from the apple are perfectly married with the strong bacon flavors. Oh - and of course the cheese itself is rockin'. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I tried it out and it was pretty good, but I used red apples and found that I got tired of the sandwich half way through, but my family really liked it! Next time I'm going to use green apples! Also I didn't stick to the preparation. I added another cheese and it was to overpowering. Over all I thought it was a very good and east recipe and i encourage others to try it! Happy cooking! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Make these all the time. Never thought I would like fruit in my grilled cheese, and then I thought the kids would love this. My kids are bacon lovers and they love all kinds of fruit. The two oldest can eat two each. First saw this when Paula made them. Tyler and Paula both make them the same way. Love love them. We have switched them up in many ways. The best is with pears and peppered bacon. Used many other kinds of bread, Tyler is right white is the best, and cheddar is always better. Just before your put your bacon in the oven sprinkle with ground black pepper. And it is the only way to make bacon. Not a lot of mess. They are to die for. Have fun and experiment. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This sammy is sooo good. My husband loves it!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I was very nervous about this combo but it was excellent. I didn't use the dijon and I made it with sourdough bread. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This really is the best grilled cheese. Instead of using all that butter on the sandwich, I just put the sandwich back into the skillet that I cooked the bacon in. Delish! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Super easy to make and so delish! It's my new quick go-to lunch. I don't use any fancy cheddar- just what I have in the fridge- and I use whatever bread I have on hand. Dijon, apples, cheese- perfection! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Like everyone else mentioned, I was a little concerned about adding the apples, but they turned out to be a great addition to the sandwich! Not your typical grilled cheese, but still has the same essence. Great flavor combinations! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I believe he said to cook the bacon, in the oven, for 15 minutes at 400 degrees. Change cooking time to desired crispness. I agree, would be helpful to include in recipe. Debbie item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is a great sandwich. I wasn't sure about the apples but it worked. item not reviewed by moderator and published
A wonderful combination of tastes and textures. A great meal from my favorite chef! Simple and delicious! item not reviewed by moderator and published
My favorite is a little different and always hits the spot. I use honey mustard or sweet hot mustard, apple and ham. I like the blend of sweet and salty. Any kind of cheese that you like and grill. The best!!! item not reviewed by moderator and published
This was great "Man Cave Food". Someone had commented that it was too rich and had too much mustard. When I made it. I used left over bacon that I had frozen. I crumbled the bacon, gently microveved it (90 seconds at 50% power) and sprinkled it on the sandwich, saving a few calories. I used the mustard sparingly. I used sweet figi apples. Everyone loved it. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I can't believe I'm saying this, because I saw Tyler cook this on tv and it looked wonderful, but it was just too rich for my taste. I might try it again with a milder cheese like brie. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I did not see the episode - can someone please explain how the bacon was done in the oven? item not reviewed by moderator and published
I made this grilled cheese using Panini bread that my local market sells. Used Cabot Private Select cheddar as I could not find "farmerhouse" cheddar. I followed other reviews and used the Dijon mustard sparingly and was glad I did as it adds a great flavor but too much would have overpowered the other flavors. Just grilled it and all the flavors made a most EXCELLENT sandwich! Thanks for all that gave it great reviews as I wouldn't have tried it otherwise item not reviewed by moderator and published
I watched Tyler's show Ultimate Soup and Sammy on Thursday and made both the minestrone soup and the grilled cheese Saturday. All six of us, including my ultra picky son, loved the soup and sammy! The combination of all ingredients on the grilled cheese could easily make this a signature item at one of those franchise restaurants. The tip of placing the bacon in the oven instead of frying is genius! THANK YOU TYLER FOR YET ANOTHER SET OF FABULOUS "ULTIMATE" RECIPES...THAT IS WHY YOU REMAIN MY FAVORITE! item not reviewed by moderator and published
mustard was overpowering and could not taste the bacon nor the apple. next time will do it without the mustard, but then it would not be "the ultimate". oh, well. and i am so tired of the "boom". someone on his crew needs to tell him to cut it out! childish and annoying. ok, boom! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Like so many others I thought the combination sounded outragous and it was!!! We loved it!!!!!!!! My growing picky daughter asked for a second one as a bedtime snack. I'll never fix a normal grilled cheese again. item not reviewed by moderator and published
The combination of apple, bacon and cheddar is to die for! I'll probably go a little easier on the Dijon next time, though. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Saw Tyler's show on a cold day and decided to surprise my family with a twist of a comforting staple. With the Minestrone Soup recipe included, this meal was a big hit with my very picky eaters. Even second helpings were in demand. Thanks Tyler, for another successful recipe for my family's pallet. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I was hesitant to try this recipe. I love all the ingredients individually but didn't think they would mesh together. Boy was I wrong. It was delicious! I didn't change a thing and used my panini press. We added a bowl of tomato soup and it was a very comforting supper on a cold night. item not reviewed by moderator and published
First snow of the year and I wanted a grilled cheese so I searched for something new on this webiste and found this one. Not really a big bacon fan so I used lean deli ham, mixed provalone with a little cheddar and apples straight from the orchard where we went apple picking....awesome!! I will use this recipe again and again item not reviewed by moderator and published
this is the best panini i have ever had. the ingredients sound weird but dont cut out anything! the people who are suggesting to cut out the apple might as well put some craft cheese slices on bread and be done with it. use this recipe if you want something different and fantastic. we made it for dinner and reheated for lunch. it was still good the next day item not reviewed by moderator and published
Grill slow so the apples can soften a little. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This flavor combination was sensational! What a savory sandwhich! It is perfect with soup on a winter day. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This would be great at any party or just snacks for the weekend. I tried mine with smoked gouda cheese and turkey bacon, and then another w/cheddar and jack cheese w/turky bacon. Yum! Great one Tyler {their isn't anything he makes that I do not like}.We don't eat pork or shrimp so I sub out his receipes w/beef and or chicken!! This one is a keeper. Enjoy item not reviewed by moderator and published

Excellent grill cheese sandwich. The apple is a great compliment to the bacon and cheese. You'll love this and it's easy, too! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Easy to make although I think they should include how he cooks the bacon in the oven as part of the recipe. Apple was a nice touch. Would not go overboard on the cheese or it overwhelms everything. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Watching the show it looked and sounded amazing. I think the mustard and crunchy apples killed it. I love Tylers recipes; but this was disappointing. And, took more than 10 minutes w/cooking the bacon. item not reviewed by moderator and published
so quick, so easy, so delicious! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Ugh. It was excellent without that. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Even though the ingredients may seem unconventional, they are what makes this grilled cheese THE BEST that I have ever tasted. The mustard compliments the cheese, and adds some nice tanginess, while the apple lends a nice crunchy fresh flavor, and the bacon gives it that sinful touch. Try it...you might love it, too! item not reviewed by moderator and published
My family and I loved everything about this recipe. I wouldn't change a thing! item not reviewed by moderator and published
What could be better then bacon cheese and apple on a snowy day!!!! Nice and warm and toasty. item not reviewed by moderator and published
Who could have thought that grilled cheese could get any better, but this was a real keeper. I loved it! item not reviewed by moderator and published
For the prep time and fat content I have to admit I would probably just as well have a regular old grilled cheese. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is the best grilled cheese I have ever made. Also this is so easy to make. item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is the best sandwich I ever ate and the applewood smoked bacon (Trader Joe's) makes all the difference in the world. Using rustic bread gives this sandwich a terrific crunch. We all loved it and won't make it any other way from now on. item not reviewed by moderator and published
I made this last night after watching the episode and I have to admit that it was as Tasty and Delicious as Tyler said it would be. I changed the recipe up a bit by using whole grain bread/Pam instead of butter/turkey bacon/provolone cheese/and dijon mustard. It was so delicious and yummy. Will keep this one! :) item not reviewed by moderator and published
Absolutely wonderful!! I was a little unsure how the apple was going to taste but it was great. All the flavors worked so well together. I will continue to make the updated grilled cheese. item not reviewed by moderator and published
sweet, cheesy and smokey!! Perfect combonation!! :0) item not reviewed by moderator and published
so simple and so good! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Great Sandwich. My son has been begging me to make it ever since the show. I wasnt sure about putting apples in it, but now that I have tried it, I'm not leaving them out! item not reviewed by moderator and published
This is a great take on a classic! I love the mustard on this sandwich. I'm a little bit of a health freak so I used wheat bread and turkey bacon. Still was mouth watering! item not reviewed by moderator and published
So simple, but everyone loved it! item not reviewed by moderator and published
Awesome sandwich! The title says it all, I served it with a creamy tomato soup and it was a hit! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I saw this on tv this morning, and just had to make it for lunch. It was absolutely delicious! Since I'm watching my weight, to make 1 serving I used 2 slices of lite bread, 1/4 cup fat free shredded kraft cheddar cheese, 1 tablesppon of hormel 50% less fat bacon bits, and 1/3 of a granny smith apply. I quickly fried both sides in 1/2 tablespoon of butter and then toasted it in the toaster for 5 minutes. What an absolutely delicious sandwhich. Good job Tyler! item not reviewed by moderator and published
I love grilled cheese, and this is a great way to kick it up a bit. We weren't sure about the apples, but they really made the sandwich. It sort of toned down the richness of the cheese, and the mustard gave it the perfect bite. My husband thought apples and mustard were sacreligious on a grilled cheese, so he opted for carmelized onions instead on his. He tried mine and had to admit that mine was much better with the apples. We did it on sliced sourdough, which was perfect. Remember to be patient with the sandwiches! Don't flip too soon, cook on low and they will be crisp and delicious! item not reviewed by moderator and published
