Episode 8: Tight Squeeze

Filming in the cramped kitchen at Fiamma restaurant in Las Vegas forced the production team to take advantage of all spaces — high and low — to capture the best shots of the rivals as they cooked.

Episode 8: Girl Power

The other two female rivals, Chefs Elizabeth Falkner and Duskie Estes, congratulated Chef Guarnaschelli after her Kitchen Stadium win.

Episode 7: Captain Brown

No stranger to actual cockpits, Alton Brown has been flying planes for more than 10 years.

Episode 7: Looking Out for Each Other

Season 2 rivals and close competitors Chefs Nate Appleman and Amanda Freitag seemed to have formed Next Iron Chef's newest alliance. Chef Appleman generously helped Chef Freitag as she struggled to open the ice cream machine and crack in half her wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano, and this week Chef Freitag chose him for her teammate.

Episode 7: Bringing Home the Bacon

To prepare for the Chairman's Challenge of Transcendence, Food Network's culinary department tracked down dozens of pounds of smoked slab and sliced bacon, Canadian bacon and pork belly.

Episode 6: Why the Odd Face?

Alton makes a hilariously silly face as he presents to the chefs a host of odd culinary marriages.

Episode 6: Close Quarters

It's a tight squeeze in the small kitchen at Nobhill Tavern as the five rival chefs, Alton and the Next Iron Chef production team try to maneuver carefully around each other and do their jobs at the same time.

Episode 6: Freitag's on Fire

Chef Freitag couldn't hide her intense relief and sheer excitement at being named this week's challenge winner. "I'm completely overwhelmed," she said later.

Episode 6: The Waiting Game

The chefs gathered in the kitchen for a few anxious moments before Chefs Nate Appleman and Jehangir Mehta face off in the Secret Ingredient Showdown.

Episode 6: Phone Break

When the cameras stopped rolling, Donatella took advantage of the downtime to show off something on her phone to fellow judge Iron Chef Zakarian.

Episode 5: Underneath Cloche Number One

Alton couldn't hide his surprise when he revealed what's beneath the first cloche: an invitation to a Las Vegas wedding to the five chefs who survive this week's challenge.

Episode 5: Monstrous Mortadella

This marbled beauty topped the scales at a whopping 180 pounds.

Episode 5: Work-Related Injury

Despite a few torched fingertips, Chef Mehta managed to cook up a duo of ostrich egg-based offerings including soufflé and French toast ice cream.

Episode 5: In Shock

The remaining five rivals looked on in disbelief as Chef Falkner walked out of Kitchen Stadium for the last time after what was an especially emotional elimination.

Episode 4: Potential Prison Bribes

Chef Falkner's crispy, cheesy gougeres may have been Alton’s favorite element of her winning dish. He told her, "Chef, I'm pretty sure I can trade these for cigarettes in prison."

Episode 4: Real-Life Fruit Ninjas

Taking a break from the stress of their head-to-head Showdown, Chefs Marcel and Spike relaxed with a game of Fruit Ninja using extra-large knives and mini watermelon.

Episode 4: A Bro Alone

Chef Vigneron couldn't hide his sadness as he watched his best friend and Next Iron Chef ally leave the kitchen for the very last time.

Episode 3: Spice Man

Chef Mehta was photographed inside Dragunara Spice Bazaar, a shop at the Los Angeles Farmers Market that carries over 400 herbs and spices.

Episode 3: Cooking Opposites

"I guess I'll be looking for that liquid nitrogen," Chef Guarnaschelli, a classical chef, said after it was revealed that her dish must represent the personality of Chef Vigneron, a known molecular gastronomist with a flair for the contemporary.

Episode 3: The Devil and the Cheese

For Chefs Appleman and Greenspan, cooking each other's personality was less a head-to-head showdown and more of a team effort. "It's not about getting you," Chef Appleman told his pictured partner. "I look at this like we're in this together."

Episode 3: Laughing Out Loud

It's not all work and no play at the judges' table. Chefs Freitag and Falkner were caught up in a fit of laughter while presenting their dishes to the panel.

Episode 2: Hands in the Air

Has the stress of the competition proven too much for Alton? While overseeing the Chairman's Challenge of Innovation, the host threw up his arms and seemed to look above for mercy.

Episode 2: Sizing Up the Competition

Chefs Appleman and Greenspan stopped by Chef Mehta's station after the Chairman's Challenge to see what he cooked up for Team Falafel. Chef Mehta ultimately won the challenge with his Asian-Mediterranean rolled falafel dish.

Iron Chef Zakarian got up close and personal with Chef Freitag's white bread-based offering. He must have liked what he smelled — and tasted — because he called her offering "really a yummy dish," and she ultimately survived to cook another day.

Episode 2: Food Fight

Once the stress of the Showdown had passed, Chefs Falkner, Estes and Freitag let loose in a well-meaning food fight in Kitchen Stadium.

Episode 1: Portable Pantry

Food Network's culinary team traveled with the Next Iron Chef rivals and judges to Paradise Cove Beach in Malibu, Calif., to set up the Chairman's Challenge of Resourcefulness. To create a Kitchen Stadium look-alike on the shoreline, the team spent three hours hauling to the beach all the food, five fire pits and 200 pounds of coal in a single all-terrain vehicle.

Episode 1: From Alton's Point of View

On this season of The Next Iron Chef, host Alton Brown took filming duties into his own hands, capturing behind-the-scenes video and of the rivals during the most-interesting moments of challenges. Alton became a subject in this picture of a picture, in which he snapped Chef Estes cooking on the beach.

Episode 1: Safe on the Sidelines

While Chefs Love and Mendelsohn battled it out for the chance to stay in the competition, the eight safe rivals watch from the sidelines, all pleased to be merely spectators. "Nobody wants to be the first two people in a showdown. That's for sure," Chef Falkner admits.

Episode 1: Back for More

In the end, it's Chef Mendelsohn who earned the right to cook another day and Chef Love who was the first rival to be sent home. "It is fabulous to move to round two," Chef Mendelsohn told Alton and the judges after the showdown.
