Broken Shaker mixologist Gabriel Orta says the key to a great cocktail starts with the ingredients—such as freshly squeezed orange juice and a liqueur making a comeback from the 1920s, Cherry Heering. (Movie buffs may recognize this cocktail's name, which comes from the 1922 movie Blood and Sand, starring Rudolph Valentino.)

Ingredients

1 ounce blended Scotch

1 ounce sweet vermouth

1 ounce cherry liqueur, preferably Cherry Heering brand

1 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice, from blood oranges, if possible

Ice cubes

Cocktail cherries, for garnish

Directions

  1. Add equal parts Scotch, vermouth, cherry liqueur, and orange juice to a cocktail shaker. Fill shaker with ice cubes. Cover and shake briefly, about 10 seconds. Uncover and, using a strainer, pour the cocktail into a coupe glass. Garnish with a few cherries skewered through a cocktail toothpick. Serve immediately.
