Ohio Margaret
I rated these average because of the amount of work involved. And while the taste is good, it too had some problems. First off, making candied oranges is a long pain. I guess they add to the taste, although one of my complaints is that there is such a strong orange flavor from the glaze that it overpowers the taste of the shortbread. So, adding candied oranges to it just increases the orange flavor. I guess it makes them look nice...fancy, but not sure I would pick up a piece of this at a party, with the orange slice on top. Looks like it would be a bit weird to bite through. I wish I would have tasted these prior to the glaze. Adding a vanilla bean, which is not cheap and toasted anise seeds should give the cookie a very distinct flavor. Now I will never know. I will say this...I'm not a fan of black licorice and so the anise seeds concerned me, but I was surprised that I wasn't put off by their taste. To crush the anise seeds you either need a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. There are other shortbread recipes that are easier and just as tasty that I would make before this again.
