Ginger Mint Julep

You know if Yolanda's coming over, I've got to make a good cocktail. Here's a favorite — inspired by the Kentucky Derby — but with my twist. I muddle some fresh ginger with the mint and use ginger-infused bourbon.

Ingredients

4 sugar cubes

1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, plus mint sprigs, for garnish

One 1/2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced

1/3 cup ginger-flavored bourbon, such as Virgil Kaine

Crushed ice

Candied ginger, for garnish

Directions

Special equipment:
a muddler
  1. In each of two julep cups or rocks glasses, muddle 2 sugar cubes with half of the mint leaves and the fresh ginger. Divide the bourbon evenly between the two glasses and top with the crushed ice.
  2. Stir until thoroughly chilled. Garnish with the mint sprigs and candied ginger before serving.
