If your dreams of woody hikes and cozy cabins are on hold until next year, there might be an option in the freezer aisle. Oregon-based ice cream shop Salt & Straw came up with a series of camping-inspired ice creams to help recreate the tastes — as well as the food rituals — of camping.
Start with Buttermilk Blueberry Pancakes & Eggs, a pancake batter-flavored custard with griddled blueberry coffee cake swirled in, as well as Vermont maple syrup and brown sugar bacon. The Cast-Iron Cornbread with Huckleberry Jam is vegan, a salted vanilla coconut ice cream with skillet-grilled cornbread and the wild berries hikers love to pluck along trails in the Pacific Northwest. Few campouts are complete without campfire s’mores, reimagined in this case as a salted hazelnut praline situation, with chocolate pudding ganache, vanilla bean marshmallows and praline graham crackers. The flavors are special edition, available in shops and for nationwide shipping online, now through September 10.
It may not be a getaway to the remote wilderness, but it's a mighty cool substitute.
