    Almost perfect...

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I was leery of trying another BBQ sauce recipe because I have an old favorite I've used many times. But this one intrigued me... because of the many positive reviews and because it looked simple--not too many ingredients. It cooks up thick and rich, good dark color and a nice tang from the vinegar. But as it says in some earlier posts, the black pepper overpowers the recipe. It leaves a little too much heat on the tongue--this won't appeal to kids and even some adults will be be reaching for more beer or iced tea to wash it down. The first batch I couldn't serve to guests because of the pepper. For the second batch I cut the pepper in half--came out much better. Also, I reduced the white sugar from 5 to 3 tablespoons, and that small reduction made the sweetness just right. I also used 1 tablespoon of grated, dried onion (because that's all I had in the house) instead of onion powder. Still came out good. Finally, I threw a dash of liquid smoke into the recipe. Considering all these changes, you might wonder why I gave this recipe a "good" rating. I liked the fact that I didn't have to open 10 seasoning jars to get a fairly complex, rich, dark, mildly sweet BBQ sauce. It has a nice fresh, not-bottled taste too. Stir the sauce often to keep it from sticking and burning toward the end of the cooking time. Read more

    Use freshly ground pepper

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
We used pure ground black pepper. It was too fine and overpowered the sauce. The flavor would have been spot on if we had... used the fresh ground black pepper. Read more

Best BBQ sauce I have had

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
WOW! This sauce is amazing. Flavorful, just the right balance of tang and sweet. I tasted it several times as it simmered,... and I was amazed at how differently it tasted during the 75 minutes. It was by far the best at the end, so I recommend following the recipe exactly. I made this for the Neelys' sloppy joe recipe, and they were to die for with extra sauce on the top. I will never be able to stomach bottled BBQ sauce again. Thank you, Neelys! You and your sauce are the best!Read more

    Love it!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I have been making a BBQ sauce similar to this, but this brought it to another level. I did not add the full amount of... pepper, because I like some heat, but that would be too much "kick" for me. I tasted this when I first put it in the pot to cook and was disappointed, but that was a mistake. When the BBQ sauce had a chance to cook I was so surprised how much I liked it. Wow, it is good.Read more

    Restaurant Sauce

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
My husband and I just visited Neely's Barbecue in Nashville, and I have to say that I LOVED their BBQ sauce!!! Now that I... see the recipe here on the website, I can't wait to try it to see if it tastes the same when made at home. If you are in Memphis or Nashville, I recommend you try their restaurant. The food was great, and we got to meet one of Pat's cousins!Read more
