New Toast Trend

The newest trend popping out of toasters may be sweeter than you think. Sweet potato "toast" is gaining on traditional toast as a favorite nutritious snack. The Kitchen's giving you a first look at the trend with two unique takes on a breakfast classic.

Sweet potato "toast" is a hot trend in the US and the darling of social media, food blogs and many magazines. Unlike traditional bread, sweet potatoes are gluten-free, which allows those who are intolerant to enjoy a delicious slice of toasty goodness. In addition, sweet potatoes offer lots of nutritional benefits. They are a terrific source of fiber and vitamins.

Sweet potato toast can be made in a snap. Here's how you do it:

  1. Scrub a sweet potato clean (you can leave the skin on!) and cut into 1/4-inch slices. (This works best if you start by lobbing off part of the side to make a level surface, then placing the flat side down on the cutting board.)
  2. Pierce each slice with a fork to help steam escape and improve the texture.
  3. Par-cook in the microwave for 3 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  4. Toast on the highest setting of your toaster until tender when pierced with a fork.

Note: You can also bake sweet potato toast in an oven or toaster oven at 450 degrees F until tender (about 20 minutes), turning halfway through.

Toasts can be eaten with savory or sweet toppings. For the savory style, we like to top ours with chicken salad, bacon and sliced avocado. And for a sweet treat, smear the slices with your favorite nut butter and crunchy toppings. Jeff Mauro likes cashew butter, honey and toasted coconut flakes. Other topping ideas include poached eggs, hummus, PB and J, tuna salad or chocolate-hazelnut spread. The flavor combinations are endless!
