Bourbon Hibiscus Tea

  • Level: Easy
  • Yield: 1 drink plus 1 1/2 cups simple syrup
  • Total: 50 min (includes cooling time)
  • Active: 10 min
This drink is not only delicious, it happens to be gorgeous, too! The pink hue comes from the hibiscus tea-infused simple syrup and a garnish of edible flowers. A lemon wheel makes it even prettier.

Ingredients

Hibiscus Simple Syrup:

1 cup sugar

2 hibiscus tea bags

Drink:

3 tablespoons (1 1/2 ounces) bourbon (I like Virgil Kaine)

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice plus lemon wheels, for serving

Dried hibiscus flowers or other edible flowers, for garnish, optional

Directions

Special equipment:
cocktail shaker
  1. Make the simple syrup: Heat the sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan over high heat until boiling. Remove from the heat and add the tea bags. Let steep 10 minutes before removing the tea bags. Let cool.
  2. For each drink: Stir together 3 tablespoons simple syrup, the bourbon and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker. Pour over ice and garnish with lemon wheels and flowers, if desired.

Despite the not so great written instructions, and the odd use of tablespoons versus ounces, this is a fantastic cocktail, very balanced. It's basically a spin on a whiskey sour with a snazzier simple. Can't lose, delicious! Especially with a dried lemon wheel. This is going into our regular rotation! (Of note, I used 4 teabags in my syrup to make the hibiscus flavor stronger. Also makes a nice non-alcoholic spritzer with lemon seltzer!)
