Ingredients

1 pound dried purple corn kernels and cobs

4 quarts cold water

2 sticks of cinnamon

6 whole cloves

2 star anise

Pinch of nutmeg

3/4 cup dark brown sugar

1/2 cup fresh lemon juice

1 cup fresh orange juice

Directions

  1. Fresh sliced fruit, such as oranges, strawberries, and pineapples for garnish
  2. Cover the corn with water in a large kettle. Add the cinnamon and cloves and bring the water to a boil over high heat. Lower the heat, cover the kettle and simmer 40 to 50 minutes, or until the corn has softened. Strain the liquid into another pot and discard the corn and spices. Dissolve the sugar into the hot liquid. Add the lemon and orange juices and taste for sweetness. Chill thoroughly. When ready to serve the drink, garnish with sliced fruit.
