This salad is really all about highlighting strawberries in their peak season. We use some strawberries to create a concentrated syrup that gets tossed with a strawberry salad for the ultimate strawberry flavor bomb.
Combine the sugar, 3 tablespoons water, the orange zest, thyme and one-third of the strawberries in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar, until slightly syrupy, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool completely, about 1 hour.
Combine the remaining strawberries, the blueberries and blackberries in a large bowl. Add the orange liqueur and toss to coat. Strain the cooled syrup, reserving the orange zest, then pour the syrup over the berries; toss to coat. Let sit, tossing occasionally, until the fruit softens slightly and is very juicy, about 30 minutes. Transfer to a serving platter or bowl along with the reserved zest.
