Ingredients

  • 2 ham hocks
  • 3 pounds green beans
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 pounds small red new potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons seasoned salt

Directions

In a large pot, fill with enough water to just cover ham hocks and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer 45 minutes. Add beans and sugar and continue cooking another 25 minutes. Add potatoes and salt and cook until potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes more. Remove hocks from pot and remove meat from the bone. Add meat back to the pot, add salt and pepper, to taste, and serve.

    Super easy!

I did use fresh beans as well as the sugar and I think the beans were fine. I think the sugar does add something to the... recipe. Made it twice so far and will keep on my list for sure!Read more

    Disappointing

Rated: 2 stars out of 5
I love the Neelys, but I have to say that I was very disappointed when I made this tonight. First off, I couldn't imagine... cooking green beans for 45 minutes, so I waited to put them in until the last 15 minutes and they were still mushy. The ham wasn't as tender as I had oped. I followed other reviewers' advice and omitted the sugar--I was glad I did. The recipe though still lacked that famous Neely "kick." Not sure what to add, but it was pretty bland. I think it's a good basic recipe to start with, but it definitely needs something more.Read more

    Made A Few Changes--Good Recipe

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I used a large smoked ham shank and added 6 bulbs of green onions. Also added a couple dashes of red pepper flakes and... omitted the sugar. Cooked it in a slow cooker on high for first 2 hours, then turned it down to low for another 4 hours. Was wonderful. Try to use fresh green beans from your garden, if possible.Read more

    No Sugar.

This is a great recipe without the sugar. Also, it's difficult to overcook the beans so be sure you don't undercook them.

    Brings back memories

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I remember a friend of my moms used to make this dish back in the early 70's. Now that I am older I really don't care much... for ham hocks so I substituted them with pre cooked turkey butts, and used just a little less sugar and a dash of garlic powder and red pepper flakes. It was so good that we were soaking our cornbread in the pot liqur! I will be making this dish a staple for fall and winter!Read more
