Guy ventures to the Cannery Row Brewing Company for some “high-end bar grub.” Everyone’s favorite is the Parmesan pretzel with beer cheese dip. But you won’t want to miss out on the short rib grilled cheese either, complete with one slice of bread that’s entirely blanketed by provolone.
The Wild Plum is dedicated to organic and sustainable cuisine. Everything here, aside from the ketchup and mustard, is made from scratch. A hit item is the porchetta, which features pork loin stuffed with roasted pork shoulder and then wrapped in bacon and served on a bed of hand-fried potatoes.
Monterey’s Fish House is all about fresh seafood. Guy feasts on oak-grilled oysters, which are slathered with butter and garlic, then served with a spicy cocktail sauce. He follows them up with the Sicilian Holiday Pasta, which features housemade linguini dressed up with seasonal fish and seafood.
Spirito's Italian Diner may be nestled in a strip mall, but that didn't mean Guy couldn't enjoy some "old-school Jersey gravy." Owner Mike Spirito has been keeping his family's recipes alive with pizza napoletana, "monster" ravioli and the signature Roman meatballs, made with raisins and pine nuts.
Located in the heart of Sonoma wine country, Cafe Citti bills itself as a casual Italian trattoria. Chef Luca hails from Lucca, Italy, and all his dishes bring handmade to the table. On his DDD visit, Guy called the ravioli an "orchestra of flavors," and he loved the homey polenta with porcini sauce
Have a craving for handmade bratwurst? Follow Guy’s lead and head over to Brats Brothers, which draws diners from across the globe eager to sample some delectable sausages. Savor a classic brat made from pork or veal, or indulge in an exotic option like a wild boar andouille or a kangaroo sausage.
Chef-Owner Rick Hodges and his wife, Margie, are slinging more than six varieties of chili daily at their Wild West-themed restaurant. Each portion is served in an individual toasted flatbread tub (hence the restaurant’s name), which Guy thought was a great touch. He stopped here to sample the Turkey Drive Chili, which features roasted ground turkey seasoned with plenty of chili powder and Cajun spices.
If you follow the intoxicating aroma of fresh-baked rye bread in Palm Springs you could find yourself at Sherman’s Deli & Bakery. Once there, try the house-made turkey pastrami which is layered on that fabulous bread. “If that’s the only thing that you sold here I could expect lines all the way to Wisconsin,” said Guy. Or try the real-deal latkes that serve as the "bread" for meltingly tender brisket topped with creamy horseradish sauce. Be sure you don’t leave without a taste of the fan-favorite banana tart.
Stop by Frankinbun for one of the best vegan dishes Guy has ever had. The meat-free hot dog is crafted from brown rice flour, black eyed peas and aromatics and then topped with a dynamite house-made chili. Plus, try their handheld version of chicken and waffles which consists of Bavarian chicken apple sausage surrounded by a crisp waffle shell served with maple syrup.
Diners who visit At Last Cafe say "at last" for the flavorful dishes, reasonable prices and fresh ingredients. On Triple D, Guy was also saying "I'd eat that on a shoe" about the super tender and juicy pork chops and the homemade polenta made with a rich and creamy portabella mushroom sauce.
Named after Andy Warhol’s famed art studio, The Factory Gastrobar specializes in comfort food that is seasonal, sustainable, local – and aesthetically pleasing. Guy recommends the open-faced grilled asparagus sandwich and the pig ’n’ grits made with beer-braised, all-natural, organic pulled pork.
Tavern on 2 features a gastropub menu that draws influences from Asian and Mexican cuisine. Guy recommends the pig tails, which are fried and covered in a sticky, spicy Asian sauce. For a unique take on surf and turf, try the “incredibly flavorful” Belly & Sucker, composed of pork belly and octopus.
The star item on the menu at Starling Diner is the slow-roasted pot roast. Polenta, potatoes and chuck roast seared in butter are wrapped up in a gravy-topped tortilla to make one tantalizing dish that Guy calls a “power bomb of flavor.” Also try the fluffy scones served with orange honey butter.
There's no rush at Schooner or Later in Long Beach, Calif. (a schooner is a 24-ounce chalice of beer). The breakfast and lunch landmark's bangin' Belgian waffle and fluffy crab omelet with avocado are perfection. Hit the jackpot with The Mess: griddled eggs with ham, peppers, onion and cheese.
At ZAZU kitchen + farm, Chef Duskie Estes and her husband Chef John Stewart are serving up true farm-to-table dishes with a creative flair. Their menus change daily based upon the ingredients they grow and source from the surrounding area. Guy loved their Bacon-in-the-Batter Waffle served with house-made bacon toffee and bourbon gelato. Get anything with their house-cured bacon!
