Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 egg, separated
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • Parchment paper
  • 30 wooden Popsicle sticks
  • 1 cup red sugar
  • 30 green M &M candies

Directions

With a paddle attachment beat butter, cream cheese and egg yolk until smooth, reserving the white for later. Stir in flour and baking powder. Mix until stiff dough forms. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. Lightly beat egg white and set aside.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

On lightly floured surface, roll dough, 1/2 at a time, into a 15 by 9-inch rectangle. With sharp knife, cut dough into 3-inch squares. Place 3 inches apart on ungreased, parchment-lined cookie sheets.

Brush with egg white. Lightly press about 1 1/2 inches of wooden stick into bottom center of each dough square. With sharp knife, cut the dough diagonally from each corner to within 1/2-inch of center of each square. Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon red sugar over each square. Fold alternate corners of the square to the center to form pinwheel, overlapping the dough at the center pushing down gently to seal in center. Press one M & M in center of each pinwheel.

Bake for 9 to 12 minutes or until set. Using spatula, immediately remove from cookie sheets.

Did not like the taste, didn't stay together

Rated: 2 stars out of 5
I tried these at Christmas time, and I did not like the way they turned out at all... the dough was definitely not sweet... enough, but that was not may major complaint. When I folded them as directed and baked them, the M&M dye bled onto the cookie dough, and they did not stay together. After tasting them, I didn't even finish the batch. I won't make them again.Read more

    Beautiful but Yucky!

I mixed the dough and tasted a pinch and realized something was wrong! I came back to the computer and saw the reviews. ... Even though I know it was the wrong time to add sugar and vanilla - after adding flour - I did, but I don't think anything could save these cookies. The cookies just tasted like a big wad of dough in your mouth. I am very disappointed in Food Network for not checking the reviews and fixing whatever is wrong with this recipe - I count on your site for good recipes! Plus the fact of wasted time and material - I doubled the recipe so all that flour, eggs, cream cheese - in the TRASH!!!!Read more

Modify it a bit, its great!

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I made these cookies and I tasted the dough before I rolled it out... decided it needed some sugar, so I added about 1/2 cup.... I added more sweetness by rolling the dough in icing sugar instead of flour, and I added a bit of almond extract to the beaten eggwhite for flavoring. I might add some vanilla or something to the dough next time, this is pretty much a blank slate recipe, you could dress it up however you want flavor-wise.... you could add peppermint or almond or even lemon if you wanted. The cookies turned out very pretty and my family loved them. Will make them again. Read more

    very happy with this cookie

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
I have made these cookies twice now and love the way they look and taste. The one tip I have is to use 3 m&m's for the... center, it helps hold the dough down better after being baked. Will be making this cookie again and again.Read more

    Cookie Nightmare

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
I made these cookies for a cookie exchange, and ended up throwing them in the trash before I was finished baking the whole... recipe. Very misleading difficulty level. Should be listed as very difficult, simply because there are so many steps. The worst part, they taste horrible. My nine year old thought I was playing a joke on him! They should pull this recipe off the network. If you are reading this, you have been warned!Read more

    very adaptable

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This is one of my favorite cookie ideas. I use star shapes for 4th of July, hearts for Valentines Day, ovals for Easter... eggs, etc. Everyone loves them. They taste great and design wise, you are only limited by your imagination. Have fun.Read more
