Ingredients
- 3/4 cup butter, softened
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 egg, separated
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- Parchment paper
- 30 wooden Popsicle sticks
- 1 cup red sugar
- 30 green M &M candies
Directions
With a paddle attachment beat butter, cream cheese and egg yolk until smooth, reserving the white for later. Stir in flour and baking powder. Mix until stiff dough forms. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. Lightly beat egg white and set aside.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
On lightly floured surface, roll dough, 1/2 at a time, into a 15 by 9-inch rectangle. With sharp knife, cut dough into 3-inch squares. Place 3 inches apart on ungreased, parchment-lined cookie sheets.
Brush with egg white. Lightly press about 1 1/2 inches of wooden stick into bottom center of each dough square. With sharp knife, cut the dough diagonally from each corner to within 1/2-inch of center of each square. Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon red sugar over each square. Fold alternate corners of the square to the center to form pinwheel, overlapping the dough at the center pushing down gently to seal in center. Press one M & M in center of each pinwheel.
Bake for 9 to 12 minutes or until set. Using spatula, immediately remove from cookie sheets.

The sugar is not forgotten - I've made a Christmas cookie recipe for over 35 years that calls for the same ingredients. We called them Danish Pastries when I was a kid, and they have apricot preserves and a walnut in the center of a similarly shaped cookie. I think because there is sugar in the center, this is where the sweetness is to come from...adding sugar to the original recipe kind of detracts from the fact that it is to be a FLAKY cookie, not a sugar cookie, per se. It is boggling my mind that people are being so rude and accusing Food Network of writing the recipe incorrectly. It is not wrong...mix it up, chill the dough til it is firm and then roll it out...easy!

I loved this recipe when I tried it after watching Ms. Gands on the foodnetwork show years ago. I downloaded and printed the recipe after watching the show and the recipe has never called for any other suger other than the 1 cup of red sugar. I think it's great that others have turned this cookie into more of a sugar cookie on a stick. I have also added powered sugar, but never the vanilla, will try. I too hav family who like the cookie sweeter.

Obviously someone made a mistake when they typed up this recipe, the sugar & flavoring for the dough is missing. I have made these cookies @ least 2 dozen times, I make for other holidays also & just change the color of the sugar & M&M's (red & blue for the 4th of July, black & orange for Halloween. When making the dough I add 1/2 C of powdered sugar to the butter when mixing & then add 2 teaspoons of real vanilla (or lemon juice & zest after I add the egg. I also roll the dough out onto regular white sugar, instead of flour, when I'm ready to cut them. Try this and I'm sure you'll love them, just as all of my friends & family do. Also, sometimes I'll make this same recipe but add 2 teaspoons of orange juice & zest of 1 orange, use a fluted rectangle cookie cutter, bake as directed & when they have cooled I'll dip 1/2 of the cookie in melted milk or dark chocolate....delicious! Good luck.
