Ingredients

  • For Red Onion Compote
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 1/4 cups beer
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 red onions, sliced
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

For Burgers:

  • 3 pounds ground beef
  • 1/4 cup beer
  • 2 tablespoons grill seasoning
  • 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar
  • Romaine lettuce
  • 4 hamburger rolls, toasted

Directions

For Red Onion Compote:

In a medium saucepan add 1/2 cup water, beer, brown sugar, and red onions. Season with salt and pepper, to taste, and stir to combine. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Simmer, stirring occasionally for about 1 hour or until the mixture has thickened and has reduced to about 2 cups. Transfer to a bowl and set aside to cool completely.

For Burgers:

In a large bowl mix together the ground beef, beer and grill seasoning until well incorporated. Reserve half of the mixture for Round 2 Meatloaf recipe. Shape the remaining beef into 4 equal portions and flatten each portion. Place 2 tablespoons of cheese in the center of each and wrap the edges around the cheese to form a ball. Flatten each ball into patties. Place on platter and cover. Refrigerate if not cooking immediately.

Set up grill or indoor grill pan for direct cooking over medium-high heat. When ready to start grilling, oil the grate. Place patties on the hot oiled grill and cook 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium. Serve over lettuce on toasted buns topped with red onion compote. (Reserve leftover compote for Round 2 Meatloaf)

Use the leftovers from this recipe to make Ale and Onion Meatloaf.

    Very good!!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I enjoyed these burgers very much. I usually do same but w/A-1 sauce but beer worked great also. I am doing meatloaf in 2... days. The compote was GREAT and I plan on using this in many applications and expanding it. As far as the negative comments I think that some did not cook recipe. Like I said the compote was great. Thinking outside the box is why I watch food network. Thank you Sandra.Read more

Green Olives Takes Goodness Over the Top!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I never write reviews - about anything, but these burgers were so good, I just had to. Hi Charlene in Brooklyn - not too... many of us with that name. Anyway my husband and I enjoyed these burgers so much that we never got to tmaking he meatloaf. We just kept making the burgers. I topped mine with green olives. Sounds a little weird, but the tangy with the sweet onion compote just put me in heaven. We used sharp cheddar for the cheese - yum. The onions didn't taste like beer, they tasted like a warm, smooth burgundy wine. Outstanding - we will make this again.Read more

    OMGOSHHH!!!! So YUMMY!!!!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I am not a big fan of beer or beef burgers but, when she made the delicious looking red onion compote on today's show, I... decided to go for it and make the burgers as well. I was not disappointed at all! They were so moist and flavorful. I substituted some Lawry's seasoning salt, onion and garlic powder for the grill seasoning and it worked out well. I cooked the burgers on a small electric countertop grill and they looked and tasted like they came off the outdoor grill. The onion compote I could eat by itself on some crusty bread. It is so HEAVENLY!!! I haven't made the meatloaf yet, so stayed tuned, fellow Sandra fans. Also, stop hating on her, you haters. For people like me who don't have lots of time or lots of money for the oh-so-fresh out of the garden ingredients, I appreciate her use of canned/packaged foods and money saving ideas. I am definitely all about stretching my food dollars for my family. Thanks Sandra, for all that you do. Keep up the creative work! God bless you. Read more

    Recipe Haters

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
Who are these haters?!@#$. If you don't like the show or the host don't watch it. I think the idea of being able to... make two different meals is a good idea for a show. No one is forcing you to do it immediately. Try reading the recipe first and make good sound decisions for yourself instead of bashing the program and host for your stupidity. Remember reading is fundamental. BTW, I enjoyed the recipe. Instead of a few pieces of lettuce with bread, I placed the burger on top of a salad bed.Read more
