Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 lemons, juiced
  • 1 (750 ml) bottle vodka
  • 2 fresh mint sprigs
  • 1 whole watermelon, 10 pounds or larger

Directions

Dissolve the sugar in the lemon juice. Pour out 1/4 cup vodka and add the lemon mixture and the mint sprigs to the bottle. Cap, shake, and let sit from 1 hour to overnight for the flavors to develop.

Cut a plug from the watermelon about 3-inches deep and as big around as the top of the bottle. Upend the bottle into the hole and let it sit for a couple of hours or until most of the vodka lemonade has been absorbed into the watermelon. Re-plug the watermelon and refrigerate it for a few hours. Slice and serve.

    seeds are the key

pick a seeded watermelon! The seeds give the vodka little pockets to seep into.

    When we were younger

We would do the same thing, with plain vodka (your talkin the 70's), is cut a hole and jam the dowel end of a wooden spoon in... there, stir and break up the innards of the melon, scoop a bit out and insert the bottle. It emptied out pretty quick. Can't slice it after that, but you can drill holes and insert straws for a kicked up luau.Read more

    Not so spiked watermelon

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
This was a neat idea until SEVERAL HOURS went by and only about an inch of the vodka had filtered into the watermelon. I did... everything according to the directions but it was a flop and a disappointment to our party. I do not recommend this recipe to anyone. At least the watermelon was not a waste!Read more

    great idea???

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
What a great idea for a party pleaser... After spending about $20 for ingredients, I was anxious to get going. After about... 3 hours, I checked on the progress of the "spiking" and noticed that only about 1" of liquid had absorbed into the watermelon. I lifted the bottle slightly to see if there was something blocking the opening and some leaked out so I immediately replaced the bottle...3 hours later, about another 1/2" of liquid absorbed. I'm not sure how much longer I was to wait, but all in all, about 6 oz. of the brew was in the watermelon...luckily it was a good watermelon without anything else! Where did I go wrong???Read more
