The origins of this sandwich shop chain stretch back to the early 1900s, when Giovanni Amato would sell his between-the-bread creations out of a cart on the streets of Portland. Amato’s Italian sandwich is still a customer favorite: A long, soft roll comes stuffed with ham, cheese, pickles, raw onions, green peppers, black olives and tomatoes.
