Gooey Butter Cake, a regional specialty, was created by accident in the 1940s, when St. Louis baker Johnny Hoffman used the wrong proportions to make cake batter. The irresistibly delicious mistake can now be found all over town, including Park Avenue Coffee, where siblings Dale Schotte and Marilyn Scull serve up their mom’s recipe. More than 70 flavors are available, including seasonal twists like eggnog and pumpkin caramel, but Mom’s Traditional is a must for those trying the buttery-crusted specialty for the first time.
