Host Kal Penn tests the taste buds of everyday Americans, recipe developers and chefs in a high-stakes culinary competition. The competitors must prove they have stellar tasting abilities combined with extensive food knowledge to complete a series of increasingly difficult taste tests. Competitor Shani Porter, personal chef to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, is an intense competitor, but a "sweet hairdo," bacon bouquet and tricky beer situation keep her on her toes. Her biggest little supporters boost her with a sweet message. Then Broadway writer Ryan McPhee, who has cooked over 500 dishes in the last year, steps up to face his first two mystery cloches.

Ryan McPhee overcomes his lack of culinary training to correctly answer the first two challenges in his quest for the Golden Cloche. He goes up against a traditional Persian dish with an unknown fruit, a secret spice on roasted crickets and even oversized chocolate art. After getting caught in a sticky situation, Ryan turns to panelist Nilou Motamed to help him identify a mysterious Southern syrup. Then, Navy veteran and recipe tester Renae Wilson discovers that there are no simple questions on Money Hungry.

Kanchan Koya, the Spice Mama, steps up to the tasting table, but her Harvard doctorate in molecular science can only take her so far as she gets stumped early on and considers using her Flavor favors. Under the cloches, Kanchan finds edible footwear, a traditional tea and a familiar but puzzling exotic meat. Tensions are high as the Spice Mama faces some very expensive taste tests!
