Meryl Streep Is a Big Fan of Wendy’s

Saoirse Ronan has revealed that, on the set of 'Little Women,' the Oscar-winning actress ordered in fries.

How can Meryl Streep manage to be both so elegant and so relatable at the same time? The latest example of, well, kind of both those qualities, really: The esteemed actress ordered Wendy’s to the set of Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming big-screen adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel "Little Women," in which she stars alongside Florence Pugh, Timothée Chalamet, Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Bob Odenkirk, Laura Dern and others.

Ronan revealed as much in a question-and-answer session with Gerwig and some cast members in Los Angeles last week, Los Angeles Times staff writer Amy Kaufman shared on Twitter last Thursday.

"At #LittleWomen Q&A, Saoirse Ronan says she was shocked when Meryl Streep ordered @Wendys to set," Kaufman tweeted. "'I was saving money,' Streep jokes."

Of course, Kaufman’s tweet sparked immediate speculation about what Streep’s go-to Wendy’s order might be.

"Did she order spicy nuggets?!?" wondered one commenter.

Good question. This week, that commenter and anyone else who might be curious got their answer. Streep, it turns out, is a serious fry fan.

In an appearance on The Ellen Show, Ronan said she had just one scene with Streep in the movie and, because she was so in awe of the actress, she was rather nervous about it before the scene was filmed. Ronan’s co-stars Pugh and Chalamet, though, had a number of scenes with the 21-times-Oscar-nominated, triple-Oscar-winning actress.

"They texted me at the end of one of their shoot days and they were like, 'Dude, Meryl ordered Wendy’s today. Meryl was hungry and she was like, "I’d love some fries," or something,'" Ronan told Ellen DeGeneres. "And then like 20 seconds later someone was like" — and here Ronan assumed the position of a humble servant "'Do you want some fries? I’ve got some fries.'"

Ronan added that she had been able to keep her nerves in check while filming the scene with Streep, but was floored afterward by the fact that she had worked with her.

"But she’s so down to earth and so cool," DeGeneres insisted.

And clearly a fast-food fan to boot. Maybe a Frosty to go with the fries next time, Ms. Streep?
