After the happy couple, the cake is the center of attention at a wedding — so you'll want to doll it up with a cute topper. These ideas are inexpensive (win!) and by making your topper yourself, this important wedding detail will feel personal and playful (win-win!). Here are three ideas to try — whether you're a DIY newbie or pro.

Paper punches make easy work of what could be the hardest part of this project: getting the perfect, symmetrial heart shape.

Gather your supplies. For this project you’ll need scrapbook paper in assorted colors (choose your wedding palette or go classic with pinks, reds and neutrals!), hot glue, three sizes of heart-shaped paper punches, thick gold wire, wire snips, and a microfiber cloth. Start by plugging in your hot glue gun and setting it to low.

Punch one heart of each size out of each piece of scrapbook paper. You should end up with one small, one medium and one large heart in each color. Set aside.

Using your wire cutters, snip pieces of the gold wire in varying heights. Hold a microfiber cloth in one hand and one side of the wire in the other, and run your fingers (covered with the cloth) over the wire. This will help straighten out any kinks. Repeat until you have a wire for each heart.

Place a small dab of hot glue on the back of each heart. Not too much — otherwise you’ll see the glue through the paper. Place the tip of a wire in each dab of glue and let them cool completely. Stand them on top of your cake in a fun, jaunty fashion.

This topper idea is perfect if people like to say you and your fiance go together like... well, you know! Felt gives this project a quirky but vibrant look — perfect for a rustic or cozy theme.

Gather your supplies. For this project you’ll need green and orange felt, scissors, green pom poms, hot glue, tissue paper, embroidery thread, and green floral wire.

Cut out a small rectangle of green felt out and hot glue four pom poms in a row down the middle.

Run a small strip of hot glue on each end and pinch them together to form a pocket for the pom poms.

Use your scissors and trim the excess felt at each end and on the top near the poms poms to create a pea-pod shape. If necessary, use hot glue to secure the felt to the sides of the pom poms — a snug fit is key to the look.

Form a carrot shape out of tissue paper. It doesn’t need to be perfect (no carrots are!), but aim to make it wider at the top and narrower at the bottom.

Wrap a piece of orange felt around your tissue paper shape to measure how much you need. Cut it down to size and then hot glue the felt to the tissue paper. You’ll want to leave a little excess felt at the top of the carrot.

Fold the excess felt down around the top of the carrot and keep it in place using your hot glue. Work your way around so you’ve got a small hole in the center of the carrot top.

Cut thin strips of green felt about two inches long and glue them into a star shape using a dab of hot glue in the center on each layer.

Glue the center of your green felt star to the top of your carrot. Fluff and arrange the greens to your liking.

To create some extra carrot-y texture, apply a small dab of hot glue on the bakck of the carrot, and attach the end of a piece of embroidery thread. Wind the thread up and aroudn the carrot and glue the end at the top.

To place the topper on the cake, cut two pieces of green floral wire to about 4 1/2 inches each and form a loop at one end of each. Put hot glue on the loop and stick the wires to the back of your carrot and pea.

This project requires a bit of DIY skill, but if you can nail it, these custom initials will look like you bought them off Etsy.

Gather your supplies. You’ll need sticks, hot glue, clippers, gold or copper leaf sheets, small faux leaves, a paintbrush, Mod Podge or another glue, and scissors or pinking shears.

Cut your sticks down the appropriate sizes to create your letters (if you prefer, create thicker characters by attaching two sticks together with hot glue.) You'll need to embrace a more square style for rounded letters.

Build the letters with hot glue, and also create a plus-sign shape to put between them.

Use a paint brush to coat one side of the faux leaves with Mod Podge or glue.

Place the leaves glue-side down on the copper leaf sheet and let it dry as long as possible. Using pinking shears cut down the leaf into a shape that works with the size of your letters. Glue the leaves on to the letters.
