If you’ve never tried making a cake in the slow cooker, you’ll be delighted when you try this recipe. The result resembles a giant lava cake — rich, gooey and perfect with vanilla ice cream, sprinkles and chopped nuts.

Special equipment:
a 6- to 8-quart slow cooker
Spray a 6- to 8-quart slow cooker with cooking spray.
In a large bowl, stir together the flour, granulated sugar, salt and 1/4 cup cocoa powder. Add the chocolate milk, butter and vanilla, then mix into a batter. Pour into the prepared slow cooker and spread over the bottom. Top with the chopped chocolate.
Combine the brown sugar and remaining 1/4 cup cocoa powder in a pitcher. Stir in the boiling water until the sugar dissolves. Pour the water mixture over the batter and do not mix. Cover and cook on high for 1 1/2 hours.
Serve warm with ice cream, chopped roasted peanuts and maraschino cherries.
