The Smell of Friendly Competition

"I am chomping at the bit," says Scott, eager to get to the basket of fish carcass, tasso ham, Calabrian chiles and purple potatoes. "Is it because this guy is so darn cute?" Ted asks as he picks up the fish head. "I love how it's dripping all over my clothes," he adds. "Can I sniff your fingers?" asks Scott. "Any time," Ted retorts. "I think that's a cut there," Alex interjects.

French Inflection

"You're doing something really ambitious for an appetizer round," Ted tells Alex, who's eggwashing puff pastry to make vol-au-vent cups for the fish she's poaching in cream. "Is that your code that you use with contestants when they do something really dumb?" she asks Ted. "I would not be one of those people."

Coffee Breaks and Copycats

"Did you get me an assistant?" Geoffey asks Ted, hoping to get a macchiato. On the cooking front, Geoffrey's going the soup route, but in a Mediterranean direction, pureeing the Calabrian chiles for a pesto. "It doesn't surprise me that Geoffrey is copying me as usual," says Alex, overhearing he's cooking with similar flavors.

Souping It Up

"The approach that a lot of people would take would be to make this into a broth," says Scott, but that takes time. Despite his own warning, Scott makes a spring onion soup with shrimp to round out the fish. "I'm in a lot of things right now," Scott tells Ted when he checks in. "The weeds would be one of them."

Who's Getting Chopped?

"Finally!" Geoffrey shouts as Ted bring out his macchiato. "I didn't use the tasso ham," he admits, explaining that he used only the fat because he didn't want the chewiness of the ham in his stew. "Did Geoffrey meet the letter of the law here?" Ted asks as things get fake-serious. "I think you're chopped," Alex tells Geoffrey as he pretends to walk out.
