Twelve hopefuls arrive in Los Angeles to compete for the ultimate prize: their own show on Food Network. The finalists meet mentors Alton Brown, Giada De Laurentiis and Bobby Flay, who help prepare the finalists for their big debut at a Hollywood premiere party, where each contestant must prepare and present one party appetizer to Food Network executives Bob Tuschman and Susie Fogelson, as well as Hollywood insiders, including E!'s Ross Mathews, who help decide which contestants have a shot at becoming a Food Network Star. One finalist's dream ends here, and the remaining 11 continue their Star journey.

It's the halfway point in the competition, so for the first challenge the finalists are judged on their progress so far. But the tables are turned when they find out they must judge themselves! Then they're thrown in the deep end when People Magazine editor-in-chief Jess Cagle splits them into two teams to judge and evaluate mentors Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis on their own dishes. What the finalists don't know is that the bottom two on each panel will compete in a sudden death cook-off, and two finalists will be sent packing.

With impressive feats of design and engineering, the teams wow their clients, but only one can win $10,000 and the honor of presenting their cake on the couple's big day.

He's opening a new restaurant in Las Vegas called Mabel's, and he wants a cake for the big opening event that embodies everything his barbecue joint is about -- meat, bourbon, good times and good food. The stakes are high when the bakers have to make a cake for an Iron Chef, but one team rises to the challenge and walks away with $10,000.
