I Tried the Limited-Edition Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Ice Cream
Made in collaboration with Van Leeuwen, the unconventional flavor was...surprisingly good.

There’s nothing quite as comforting as a bowl of mac and cheese. Gooey, cheesy and rich, we love it just as much from a mix in a box as baked from scratch in the oven. Mac and cheese is so popular that it’s not surprising when companies try to take it in a new direction as a way to entice their fans – but the latest twist is rather surprising!
Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is chilling this summer, quite literally -- in the form of a limited-edition ice cream they are creating with Brooklyn-based Van Leeuwen Ice Cream.
This, well, interesting new Kraft Macaroni & Cheese ice cream will be available online at vanleeuwenicecream.com for $12 per pint as of July 14 as well as Van Leeuwen stores nationwide. This limited-edition ice cream is only available as long as supplies last though. Those in the New York City area will have an additional way of trying it out, as there’ll be an ice cream truck in Union Square on July 14 giving out free samples.
“We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream. That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with,” said Emily Violett, Sr. Associate Brand Manager for Kraft, in a statement to media. “As big fans of Van Leeuwen, we knew they’d be the perfect partner to create this ice cream with us. Not only does it taste delicious, but it’s also made with high quality ingredients and contains no artificial flavors, preservatives, or dyes just like our Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.”
We had the opportunity to taste the mac and cheese ice cream – with a mix of fear and trepidation – and it was surprisingly good. The cheesy, creamy flavors associated with a classic blue box of Kraft is all there, but mixed with a sweet (and also creamy) milky texture of ice cream. The result is rich, satisfying and unexpectedly enjoyable.
Kraft has been giving their classic mac and cheese some rather unconventional twists in recent years, from going candy pink for Valentine’s Day to even launching a pumpkin spice variant last fall. But ice cream may just be the strangest spin yet.
Van Leeuwen is also no stranger to odd (but absolutely creative!) flavors, having launched a limited-edition spinach flavor in 2019 in honor of Popeye’s birthday.
First spinach ice cream, and now mac and cheese. What’s next on the wild ice cream flavors menu? Will it be pizza, or maybe fried chicken? We honestly can’t wait to find out.
