I made this recipe exactly as written after seeing it on tv today. Used Major Grey's chutney. The bread stays soft after cooked and doesn't crisp up like in a grilled cheese. The overall flavors are an odd combination and sweet rather than savory. Neither of my children liked it and I didn't care for it either. I would not make it again.

When I was a kid (granted, that was awhile ago, I used to order Monte Cristo sandwiches from one of the department store restaurants in my local mall. It was sinfully declicious! When I got a hankering to try my hand making some at home, it was disappointing to find that all the recipes on this site were absolutely not what I remembered eating (couldn't find anything in any of my cookbooks either. So I tried "recreating" my beloved sandwich from memory. Last night, we had Monte Cristos made with Challah bread soaked in French Toast batter (new Joy of Cooking recipe. I cooked both sides on my electric griddle until golden brown, then added honey baked ham slices with Swiss cheese in the middle, and left the assembled sandwiches on the griddle until the cheese melted. Before removing from the griddle I sprinkled with powdered sugar and then topped with (reduced sugar maple syrup after plating. I'm sure the sandwich I used to have was deep-fried (my arteries can't take that kind of strain anymore - LOL!, but what I made was a respectable substitute. My family said they tasted great -- I recommend my "Monte Cristo" version to anyone else out there waxing nostalgic...
