Whether you spread it on sandwiches, use it in cold salads or as a base for dips, mayonnaise is just one of those condiments that’s hard to live without. Mayo is made of an emulsion of oil, egg yolk and an acid like lemon juice or vinegar. These days you can find many store-bought versions, and depending on the ingredient list, some are healthier than others. Here are five that dietitians buy and recommend.

One caveat here is that no matter what type of mayo you like to use, calories tend to be on the higher end, so portion sizes matter. Stay mindful to keep calories, saturated fat and sodium levels in check.

Ayoh, Inc.

Made with cage-free eggs and apple cider vinegar, Ayoh! Foods mayo is super creamy and high-quality. It’s a favorite of Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, LDN, author and owner of Nutrition Now Counseling who likes that it’s “free from questionable ingredients, and it goes well on tons of dishes.”

This creamy mayo is made with avocado oil and cage-free eggs and maintains that classic mayo flavor. It’s made without any sugar, corn syrup or artificial sweeteners.

Walmart

Another favorite choice of Manaker, this is a good option for those who are avoiding seed oils. It’s “made with avocado oil for a rich and delish mayo option,” says Manaker.

Made with sunflower oil and certified cage-free egg yolks, this is another creamy option available. It’s also gluten-free and certified humane.

Target

For those who are looking to keep calories in check or need to scale back on saturated fat for heart health, this classic light mayo is a good option. As someone who is predisposed to high cholesterol, I make it a point to keep this mayo in the fridge regularly. I enjoy the creamy flavor without all the calories and saturated fat found in traditional mayo.
