Many takeout or restaurant leftovers are packaged in Styrofoam, but how do you know if the containers are microwave safe? And can they go in the oven? For more info, we consulted Toby Amidor, MS, RD, CDN, award winning nutrition expert and Wall Street Journal best-selling author of Up Your Veggies: Flexitarian Recipes for the Whole Family
What Is Styrofoam?
Styrofoam is the trade name for Polystyrene, a solid plastic which is used to make plates, insulated beverage cups and bowls, trays and clamshell food containers.

Can You Microwave Styrofoam?
Styrofoam should not be microwaved unless it has a microwave-safe symbol. “The FDA keeps a close eye and tests polystyrene food containers,” Amidor says. “The packaging is safe for hot and cold food items, however not all foam containers should be microwaved.” For more information about materials and foods to avoid putting in the microwave, check out our guide 11 Things You Should Never Put in the Microwave.

Look for This Symbol for Microwave Safe
To determine if your Styrofoam container is microwave-safe, check for the small symbol with wavy lines that indicates it is safe to microwave.

Tips for Microwaving Food Containers
To safely microwave food containers, Amidor recommends the following tips:
- Use containers that are labelled with the microwave-safe symbol.
- Always follow the instructions on the label when you use microwave-safe containers to heat food.
- Never heat or store food in plastic containers that were not intended for food. Single-use containers, like cream cheese tubs, tend to warp or melt in the microwave. This may allow more of the substances in the plastic to leach into the food.
- Let food cool before adding it to a plastic container, then put it in the fridge immediately.
- Avoid using plastic containers that are visibly damaged or stained or have a bad smell.
Can Styrofoam Go In the Oven?
No, Styrofoam can’t go in the oven. “Styrofoam is made from polystyrene, which does not hold up well to heat. It can start to soften at 212-degrees F and will melt when reaching 464 degrees F,” Amidor says. “As such, do not use Styrofoam in the oven.”
