Can You Microwave Glass?
Yes, you can microwave glass as long as the container is labelled microwave safe or has a microwave safe symbol.
What’s the Microwave Safe Symbol?
The microwave safe symbol typically includes wavy lines or a picture of a microwave. This is the same symbol that appears on other microwave safe containers. How to Know If Glass Is Safe to Microwave
Glass is only safe to microwave if it is labelled microwave safe or contains the microwave safe label. If your container of choice does not have these labels, White says it is not worth the risk to place them in the microwave. “Microwaving glass that is not deemed safe (or for too long) can increase the risk of it cracking or breaking in the microwave—and then your food is ruined!” White says.
How Long Can You Microwave Glass?
“Many microwave manufacturers suggest limiting cook time for microwave safe glass to 3 minutes,” White says. “Refer to the manufacturer’s suggestions for your specific appliance.”

Tips for Microwaving Glass
To safely microwave glass, White recommends the following tips:
- Use containers that are labelled with the microwave safe symbol.
- Microwaved food gets very hot and this transfers to the glass, so always remove microwaved food carefully and with proper heat protection.
- Never heat or store food in glass containers that were not intended for food.
- Certain glass containers can go from the freezer to the microwave; be sure to check the manufacturer's instructions and usage manual.
