If you're a snacker, entertainer or dip connoisseur, chances are you've found the bottom of a good number of tortilla chip bags. And who can blame you? These corn-based snacks satisfy salty cravings, pair well with crowd-pleasing comfort foods and offer a deliciously crunchy texture that's fun to eat (those bowls of salsa and guac aren't going to eat themselves!) Yet, like all classic snacks, there's more than one to choose from — like blue corn, unsalted and restaurant-style thin to name a few.

But lucky for you, finding the best tortilla chips is nacho problem. Our editors and test kitchen staff gathered in the Food Network Test Kitchen for a blind taste test of 19 different brands and variations of tortilla chips to find the ones that truly stand out in terms of flavor, crunch, saltiness and scoopability. Whether you're looking for a sturdy chip to withstand hefty nacho toppings, one with just the right amount of salt to complement your homemade dips or a pantry staple that satisfies unexpected company, we found the top tortilla chips for all occasions.

How We Tested

Our Food Network Test Kitchen purchasing manager swept the shelves in the grocery snack aisle and brought back 19 different tortilla chips to put to the test. We conducted our test blind by assigning each variety a number and serving them plain in a bowl and nacho-fied on baking sheets — both labeled with the same number. We followed this Loaded Beef Nacho recipe on every batch so the chips were the only variable being evaluated. Testers sampled each bowl and nacho without knowing the brand, then recorded their feedback in a corresponding section of a rubric. This way, we ensured unbiased scoring on all factors, like texture, taste, saltiness and how well they held up in nacho form.

The plain chips were scored on flavor (i.e. salty, bland, corny), consistency (i.e. crispy, crunchy, soft) and size (big vs. small; thick vs. thin), while the nacho chips were evaluated on how easy or hard it was to scoop the toppings, if the taste enhanced or clashed with the topping and most importantly the durability, and if the chip was able to hold the toppings without breaking or getting soggy. We've found the best kinds of tortilla chips, no matter how you like to enjoy these salty crisps.

Our testers were especially excited to uncover that El Nacho was the chip behind their top scores, praised for its balanced flavor, signature tortilla chip crunch and restaurant flavor — thanks to the minimalist, stone-ground white corn, avocado oil and sea salt ingredients that keep these chips simple yet delicious. "This is your restaurant chip, perfectly light, crisp and those awesome air bubbles, as if they came right from the fryer," described one tester. We were especially surprised that, given the thinner surface, these chips still held nacho toppings with ease and remained a pleasant bite for snacking without leaving that undesirable sharp or cardboardy texture in your mouth. From maintaining its fresh fried flavor under the chunkiest guac or spiciest salsa to crisping up perfectly amongst hefty nachos, El Nacho had our staff raving for good reason. You can find them at your local grocery store or directly from the website.

Naturally, Tostitos are the life of every party, but especially if their blue corn variation is thrown into the mix. Not only are blue corn chips generally better for you, containing higher levels of protein and less starch, but these specific ones ranked top in scoopability, nice salt level, strong corn taste and crunchiness compared to the other blue corn variations we tested. However, they are on the thinner side and sogged up under the nacho toppings, so we recommend these solely for dipping in some cheesy queso or enjoyed just as they are — thin, salty and deliciously crispy.

While beef, beans, tomatoes, cheese, jalapenos and all the other crave-worthy toppings play an important role in a good nacho, the most important part remains the base — a.k.a a sturdy chip that can withstand all your favorite garnishes while also enhancing their savory, tangy flavors. Enter: On The Border Cafe Style Tortilla Chips. "I think this one was a pretty clear winner," said one tester. "It's crispy and has a nice corn flavor. I also really like the thickness — not too thick and not too thin." And the rest of the panel agreed. There's no other way to describe these perfect-for-nachos chips than as a one-of-a-kind balance between thin and durable, crispy and light and salty and mild, making these tortilla chips dip-ready at the first open of the bag. And this brand is certainly deserving of its "cafe style" name, as our testing panel also found the flavor to be freshly corn-like, salty and easy to scoop for your next fiesta.

While any of our picks are essentially good for snacking (because how else do you enjoy a tortilla chip?), Xochitl Corn Chips gained the top spot for its pleasant, toasted flavor eaten on their own. What was universally appreciated about these chips was their crunch, which — for anyone who loves eating tortilla chips — knows a good crisp can make or break the eating experience. However, we would not recommend these for nachos, considering their too-thin texture unfortunately becomes one with the toppings. Yet, if you're just looking for a light chip for snacking and a reliable salsa companion, Xochitl delivers. One tester noted its "pleasant shatter," medium-level salt and nice corn flavor all make for satisfying munching.

Before anyone in the testing panel knew these chips were made with avocado oil, Siete's positive feedback came from its appetizing oily flavor. And lo and behold, the avocado oil in these chips did not come to play. For those looking to swap in avocado oil in their diets without sacrificing crunch and scoopability for nachos and dips, Siete Chips Trtla Maiz Sslt is for you. The secret? Siete uses nixtamalized corn to create that nostalgic, better-tasting chip that snackers look for. And this process, combined with sea salt and mild-tasting avocado oil, creates deliciously crunchy tortillas that go well with any dip at the function. Plus, avocado oil has a high smoke point, perfect for frying tortilla chips and getting to enjoy the lingering fried taste as a result.
